Former MLB Player and Little League Legend Sean Burroughs Dies at 43

What a tragedy. Former MLB player and Little League legend Sean Burroughs dies at just 43 years old. This is a man that truly lived and breathed the game and gave us so many moments to cheer for and cherish.

Currently, details surrounding his passing is limited. With the main consensus being cardiac arrest. However, more details will be released soon.

Nonetheless, Burroughs is a name that will definitely jog some memories. Especially, when thinking of Little League. Many think of Sean as “the Little League Legend.” And for good reason.

Burroughs earned fame as the star pitcher on the 1992 and 93 Long Beach Little League World Series champions. And he made history. He was the first American-born pitcher to throw back-to-back no-hitters in the LLWS, bringing home a pair of World Series titles to his baseball-crazy hometown. Burroughs amazingly threw three consecutive no-hitters in 1993 including two in the World Series, and batted .563 in Williamsport! In four years at LBLL, Burroughs didn’t lose a single game as a pitcher, and in 74 innings of All-Star play in 1993, he struck out 171 batters and posted an ERA of 0.49. Wow.

However, even after his departure from Major League Baseball. Burroughs was still enjoying his passion and helping the next generation hone in on their skills. Sean was now coaching Little League, including his own son, Knox.

USA Today’s Bob Nightengale reveals that Sean’s passing was indeed sudden. And occurred sometime while or right after he was handling his coaching duties. Nightengale mentions,

“Former MLB Infielder Sean Burroughs, the former first-round draft pick who played parts of seven MLB seasons, collapsed and died Thursday while coaching his son’s Little League team.”

Very sad. Furthermore, The Long Beach Little League also confirms in a statement that Sean Burroughs sadly passed away yesterday. The LBLL states,

“It is with a heavy heart that I am writing this message to inform you that yesterday afternoon one of our Coaches, Sean Burroughs, tragically passed away. Sean was a legend in LBLL and the baseball community for winning back-to-back Little League World Series Championships for LBLL in 1992 and 1993. While he left LB to play for several clubs in the MLB, he returned to his home fields at Stearns Champion Park to coach his son.

I have had the privilege of coaching with Sean for the past two years and he always came with a fun & friendly attitude the kids were drawn to, a wealth of baseball knowledge that could get any kid out of a batting rut and humility worth emulating. To say this is a huge loss is an understatement. But what makes LBLL special is our community, we are a family. Families celebrate the highest highs and lift each other up during the lowest lows.

We will have his family in our thoughts and prayers during this time and try to end the season playing the kind of baseball Coach Sean would be proud of.

LBLL President and Board of Directors.”

This is a painful loss for all of baseball; especially, for the Padres and Arizona Diamondbacks. There’s some mighty fine history involving Sean and these ball clubs. For instance, let’s quickly review San Diego history.

Burroughs is the son of 1974 American League MVP Jeff Burroughs. Sean was selected in the first round with the No. 9 overall pick by the San Diego Padres in 1998. He made his major league debut in April 2002, AND recorded the FIRST walk-off hit for the Padres in Petco Park history in 2004. Nice.

Moreover, many still have a vivid picture in their minds of Sean dancing around in celebration over the Dbacks division success. Or some may remember his famous homer against the Nats in 2011. Nevertheless, the fact is Sean has quite the legacy from Little League on up. Regarding his passing the Arizona Diamondbacks say,

“The [Arizona Diamondbacks ] mourn the passing of Sean Burroughs and offer our condolences to his family and friends. Sean was a member of the 2011 NL West champion team and beloved by his teammates, coaches, staff, and fans. Rest in peace, Sean.”

Burroughs loved the game. He respected it. And he gave so much in such a short amount of time. Sean will be missed and our thoughts are with his family, friends and former teammates as well as colleagues at this time.
