Former Mets Pete Alonso and Edwin Diaz Sign With Dodgers Plus Orioles
Last season this franchise made quite the splash signing Juan Soto to the richest contract ($765 million/15 years) in not just baseball but all of sports. However, next year the organization will be missing more familiar faces. A closer and a power bat. In an offseason twist, former Mets Pete Alonso and Edwin Diaz Sign with the Dodgers as well as the Orioles.
The Los Angeles Dodgers who are coming off another World Series title, the second in two seasons; are wasting no time in crafting and improving LA’s roster to work towards another championship. To get even stronger they decided to add to their pitching staff. Enter closer Edwin Diaz.
The Athletics’ Will Sammon was among the first to break the news on Diaz joining the blue men. Sammon reports, “Edwin Diaz and the Los Angeles Dodgers are in agreement on a deal, league source tells The Athletic. Mets offer on Edwin Diaz was three years, $66 million (room for more) with some modest deferrals. The Mets had some interest in bringing Pete Alonso back but they were not comfortable going to the lengths and figures it ended up at in his deal with the Orioles, league sources said. [However] Mets did not make an offer to Pete Alonso before he agreed to Orioles deal. Mets tidbit within: they plan on having Carl Edwards Jr. (recently agreed to minors deal) stretch as a starter.”
Edwin going to the Dodgers wasn’t exactly about money. He signs with LA for just $3 million more. But still, the Mets could’ve offered more to retain him.

Less than 24 hours later, another Met hits the exit. Mister Home Run Derby finds a new home with Baltimore. Regarding Pete’s departure from New York and how dangerous the Orioles may look next season; ESPN’s Jeff Passan states,
“BREAKING: First baseman Pete Alonso and the Baltimore Orioles are finalizing a five-year, $155 million contract, sources tell ESPN. Alonso leaves the Mets to make a loaded AL East even better.
Pete Alonso’s deal with the Orioles gives him the highest AAV ever for a first baseman. He winds up with $185 million, including his $30 million salary last year, and followed the same track Matt Chapman and Blake Snell did, taking a short-term deal and turning it into a bounty.
The Baltimore Orioles lineup might have the best lineup in baseball. Whatever order Craig Albernaz chooses, he’s got Gunnar Henderson, Pete Alonso, Jordan Westburg, Taylor Ward, Adley Rutschman, Jackson Holliday, Sam Basallo, Dylan Beavers and Colton Cowser. A wrecking crew.”
Yes, watching Baltimore next year will be fun. However, as one can see New York shall look much different next season. The Mets’ core is no more. Entering this offseason, Brandon Nimmo, Drew Smith, Pete Alonso and Edwin Diaz ranked as four of the Mets’ five longest tenured players. They are all now gone.
