Former Iconic New York Jets Center Nick Mangold Passed Away At 41

He spent his 11-year career entirely with the New York Jets and even after retirement remained a fixture in the Jets community. But sadly today the team announced that former iconic New York Jets center Nick Mangold passed away at 41 years old. He died of complications of kidney disease Saturday night. Mangold had shared details about his battle with kidney disease on social media. Because of the disease he had to undergo kidney dialysis.

Mangold didn’t hold back sharing what he was going through with the Jets community. He wrote:

“In 2006, I was diagnosed with a genetic defect that has led to chronic kidney disease,” Mangold wrote in his letter addressed to “My NY Jets community.” “I’m undergoing dialysis as we look for a kidney transplant. I always knew this day would come, but I thought I would have more time.”

Despite passing away so young, Mangold left behind an enduring legacy and plenty of admirers. Which is why Vice Chairman Christopher Johnson was led to say:

“Nick was the embodiment of consistency, strength, and leadership,” said Jets Vice Chairman Christopher Johnson. “For over a decade, he anchored our offensive line with unmatched skill and determination, earning the respect of teammates, opponents, and fans alike. His contributions on the field were extraordinary — but it was his character, humility, and humor off the field that made him unforgettable.”

Mangold was selected in the first round of the 2006 NFL Draft. He earned two first-team All-Pro honors and was selected to seven Pro Bowls. And was instrumental in transforming the Jets’  offensive line into a stable unit that contributed to three playoff teams, including two AFC Championship Game units, and four winning teams from 2006-10. Mangold was also inducted into the Jets Ring of Honor simultaneously with D’Brickashaw Ferguson and CB Darrelle Revis

Mangold was well-respected by his teammates and former competitors. Such as former New England Patriots wide receiver, Julian Edelman. He posted on x.com, “Nick was a force on the field and a genuinely nice guy off of it. He will be missed.”

Ferguson had some thoughtful words about Mangold as well. He commented, “A big part of our lives were spent on that field,” Ferguson said today. “Then very early on I was at his wedding, there were so many times where we shared life tgoether, family events. I do appreciate having had the opportunity to do life with him, and not only him but his family, everyone else on that stage. … It’s a hard time.”

We sincerely wish to express our sympathy for the friends and family of Nick Mangold who touched the lives of so many people.
