Former Giants’ Quarterback Daniel Jones Signed With Vikings
Things move fast in the NFL, a player can be here today and gone tomorrow. But then they find themselves in a new place with a new team. And that’s what’s happening with former Giants’ quarterback Daniel Jones who has signed with the Minnesota Vikings. The news about Jones being benched by the New York Giants was announced on Monday Nov. 18. And head coach Brian Daboll had said Jones would remain with the team this season. However on Friday Nov. 22 Jones requested and was granted a release as he had been demoted to QB4 on the roster. But he and the team parted ways on a positive note as the team had this to say:
“Daniel came to see me this morning and asked if we would release him,” owner John Mara said in a statement. “We mutually agreed that would be best for him and for the team. Daniel has been a great representative of our organization, first class in every way. His handling of this situation yesterday exemplifies just that. We are all disappointed in how things have worked out. We hold Daniel in high regard and have a great appreciation for him. We wish him nothing but the best in the future.”
So with his tenure in New York concluded Jones was free to seek out his next opportunity. According to NFL Insider Jonathan Schultz, Daniels had a specific set of requirements he was looking for in his new team. High on his list was a team that is in playoff contention with a QB-friendly offensive system and a coaching staff known for maximizing player potential. The Minnesota Vikings was apparently the best fit for him.
Former Giants’ Quarterback Daniel Jones Signed With Vikings
Head coach Kevin O’Connell is the “quarterback whisperer” well-known for getting the best out his quarterbacks. Jones will be joining the Vikings practice squad but will have a chance to compete for the backup spot behind Sam Darnold. However, being on the practice squad gives Jones the flexibility to go sign with another team should they lose their starting quarterback. The Vikings are signing Jones to a one-year deal for the remainder of this season for $375,000, a source told Schefter. He’ll become a free agent after this season.
That Minnesota became his landing spot is somewhat ironic. Back in January 2023, Jones led the Giants to victory over the Vikings in a wild card playoff game. It was one of his best performances and the win was part of the impetus to his new contract with the Giants. He signed a four-year, $160 million contract extension. Perhaps his time in Minnesota will lead to something else great for him.
