Former ESPN Insider Adrian Wojnarowski Announces He’s Been Diagnosed With Cancer

Sometimes a job isn’t everything. However, being with loved ones and friends IS priceless. Not too long ago ESPN’s top NBA insider announced his sudden retirement; mentioning that he was leaving the sports network and ready for a life change. However, now some additional unfortunate news has emerged, a new battle; former ESPN insider Adrian Wojnarowski announces he’s been diagnosed with cancer.

Back in September Wojnarowski left a message online for NBA fans before officially departing from ESPN. A message that amassed 22 million views. In it he had explained his history on fulfilling his dream as a sports writer and why he had decided to retire from the fast-paced industry. Adrian mentioned,

“I grew up the son of a factory worker two miles from ESPN’s campus and only ever dreamed of making a living as a sportswriter. Thirty-seven years ago. the Hartford Courant gave me my first byline and I never stopped chasing the thrill of it all. This craft transformed my life. But l’ve decided to retire from ESPN and the news industry. I understand the commitment required in my role and it’s an investment that I’m no longer driven to make. Time isn’t in endless supply and I want to spend mine in ways that are more personally meaningful.

I leave with overwhelming gratitude for countless mentors and colleagues, subjects and stories, readers and viewers. No one has benefitted more than me from the belief, trust and generosity of others. The past seven vears at ESPN have been a particular privilege. I’m appreciative of the company’s leadership – especially Jimmy Pitaro and Cristina Daglas – for the understanding and acceptance of my decision to make a life change. After all these years reporting on everyone’s teams, I’m headed back to my own.”

And that’s exactly what Adrian accomplished. Becoming the general manager of the men’s basketball team at St. Bonaventure, where he graduated in 1991. Giving him more precious time during his days, instead of waiting for agents to get back to him to report more sports news and headlines.

Yet, how did Wojnarowski come to find out about his cancer diagnosis? According to Yahoo Sports, “Wojnarowski underwent a physical in February and blood tests revealed his prostate-specific antigen (PSA) was elevated. An MRI did not reveal anything and a second PSA test remained high. A biopsy was ordered and in March it revealed early stage cancer.”

Now with the news of his cancer being public, Wojnarowki gave a brief “updated” reason to Sports Illustrated for him wanting to step away from his award-winning sports career. And due to this recent revelation; most would probably feel it was all due to his health. However, Adrian maintains otherwise. Being with family is the real thrust behind his decisions. He reveals,

“When you hear cancer, you think about it going through your body like Pac-Man. Prostate cancer, it generally stays confined to your prostate and is typically slow growing.

I didn’t want to spend one more day of my life waiting on someone’s MRI or hitting an agent at 1 a.m. about an ankle sprain.

In the end it’s just going to be your family and close friends. And it’s also, like, nobody gives a s—, Nobody remembers (breaking stories) in the end. It’s just vapor.”

Wojnarowski also tells SI that when he attended the May funeral of longtime ESPN NFL insider Chris Mortensen, it made him realize that there’s more to life than being the go-to source for NBA news. It helped flip a switch. Well so far his prognosis is good.

Active surveillance is the current treatment. Which translates to quarterly checkups and regular monitoring. He’s also being instructed to improve his eating habits, exercise more and get better sleep. We wish the very best to Adrian Wojnarowski.
