Former Eagles and Redskins Hall of Fame Quarterback Sonny Jurgensen Has Died At 91

He was known as one of the purest passers in league history. It was said that it was near impossible for any one of his receivers to not catch one of his balls. One former player even said he felt that he could hit a gnat at 50 yards if he wanted to. However, because he never led a team to a Championship in 18 seasons, he didn’t receive the accolades that his colleagues did. Colleagues like Joe Namath, Johnny Unitas and Bart Starr. So, we are sad to say that former Eagles and Redskins Hall of Fame quarterback Sonny Jurgensen has died at 91.

His family made the announcement on Friday morning and issued the following statement:

“It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of our husband, father, and grandfather, Sonny Jurgensen,” the Jurgensen family said in a statement released by the Washington Commanders. “We are enormously proud of his amazing life and accomplishments on the field, marked not only by a golden arm, but also a fearless spirit and intellect that earned him a place among the legends in Canton. But to those of us who knew him beyond the stadium lights, he was the steady, humorous, and deeply loving heart of our family.

“He lived with deep appreciation for the teammates, colleagues, and friends he met along the way. While he has taken his final snap, his legacy will remain an indelible part of the city he loved and the family he built.

“We are comforted by the knowledge that he brought joy to so many. This weekend as we enjoy the game that he loved so much, join us and raise a glass, share a story and a smile, as we celebrate the extraordinary life of a man who was, to us, the greatest of all time.”

On five occasions he led the league in passing. He received five Pro Bowl nods and one All-Pro selection in his first season with the Philadelphia Eagles in 1961. As the quarterback for Philadelphia and Washington he was named to the NFL’s All-Decade Team of the 1960s alongside Green Bay Packers QB Bart Starr and Baltimore Colts QB Johnny Unitas.

When Jurgensen was traded to Washington ahead of the 1964 season, the Philadelphia bartenders allegedly wore black armbands. Jurgensen liked the night life, so they were going to miss him, lol.
