Former DT Phenom Ndamukong Suh Announced His Retirement From NFL

He was a nightmare for every quarterback he ever faced. Playing at any thing less than full speed was not an option. And as he said himself, “I left it all on the field.” And now he is leaving that field permanently. Today on social media the former DT phenom Ndamukong Suh announced his retirement from the NFL. In addition, to the retirement announcement, he also made it a tribute to his father who passed away on this day one year ago. His statement is lengthy but below it is listed in its entirety:

July 12, 2024 was the hardest day of my life.

It’s the day I said goodbye to my father, the man who raised me, shaped me, challenged me, and believed in me before I believed in myself.

He wasn’t just a dad. He was my idol, my coach, and my anchor.
He taught me what it meant to be disciplined, focused, and relentless in everything I do.

Every snap I took in football carried his fingerprint. Every time I lined up across from someone, I could hear his voice pushing me, reminding me that I wasn’t just representing myself. I was representing him, my family, my name.

Before he passed, he gave me one final piece of advice,
“It’s time to let football go. You’ve done everything you set out to do. Now it’s time for the next chapter.”

That conversation stayed with me.
So today, one year later, I’m honoring that wish.

I’m officially retiring from the NFL.

Suh spent five years with the Detroit Lions who drafted him with the the No. 2 pick in the 2010 NFL. After that he spent time with the Miami Dolphins, Los Angeles Rams, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Philadelphia Eagles.

As a rookie, he posted a career high of 10 sacks and was named an All-Pro and AP Rookie of the Year. It was the first of his three All-Pro honors, and he also was named to the Hall of Fame All-2010s team. Suh amassed 600 career tackles and 71.5 sacks, adding one interception, five forced fumbles and nine fumble recoveries — three returned for a touchdown. He appeared in 199 games, starting all but the eight he played with the Eagles in his final season.

His retirement announcement continues below:

I have so many memories to cherish.
13 seasons.
5x All-Pro.
A Super Bowl ring.
Countless battles in the trenches.

I left it all on the field, and now I’m stepping away with peace and gratitude.

Because I’ve been preparing for this moment for years. Football was my passion, but it was never my endgame.

My next season is about impact, purpose, and legacy.
About helping others build wealth, lead with intention, and create lasting freedom.

I’ve lived. I’ve learned. I’ve built. I’ve failed. I’ve succeeded. And now I want to share what I’ve learned; especially with athletes, entrepreneurs, and young people navigating life and money.

That’s why I created the No Free Lunch podcast. It’s about real conversations, real strategy, and real education.
Because freedom doesn’t come from fame, it comes from knowledge and how you move.

Now I’m using my platform to serve something bigger. If you’ve ever followed my journey… Thank you. If you’ve ever cheered, supported, critiqued, or pushed me, you’re part of the reason I kept going.

And if you’re wondering what’s next: Tune in. Follow along. I’m just getting started.

Rest in power, Dad,
Your mission lives on through me.

Ndamukong Suh Finally Makes His NFL Retirement Official

While Suh was with the Buccaneers from 2019 to 2021 that team won Super Bowl LV for the 2020 season. Tom Brady was the quarterback of that team and he and Suh were teammates. Prior to that when Suh was on the Dolphins squad, Brady tried to butter him up. After Suh had hit Brady on the field, Brady slapped him on the butt and said, “Stay out of our f***ing backfield today.” Suh looked at him and said, “I’m not your f***ing friend.” And Brady was like, “Okay I respect that.” But after playing together in Tampa Bay, Suh had nothing but respect for Brady.

He has been out of football the past two seasons. So now with his official retirement, he is off to start the next phase of his life with his No Free Lunch podcast. No doubt he will handle that with the same level of fierceness with which he played. We wish a hearty congratulations to Suh on his retirement and best wishes to him on all his future endeavors.
