Former Dodgers All-Star and World Series Champion Davey Lopes Has Passed at 80

The Baseball world has lost another legendary player. A member of the blue, who was one of the best all around hitters. In the MLB the leadoff hitter receives more plate appearances over a season than anyone else in the lineup, making their ability to reach base critical. And this former Dodger was one of the best to get this important job done. We are saddened to report that former Dodgers All-Star second baseman and World Series champion Davey Lopes has passed at 80.

Davey Lopes played the game he loved for more than a decade. Some 16 wonderful seasons. During that time the Rhode Island native known as one of baseball’s best base stealers. However, in recent years Lopes was battling Parkinson’s, and his health had unfortunately been deteriorating and failing. Davey was in a hospice center before being transferred to the hospital, where he passed away surrounded by family.

The Los Angeles Dodgers shared their condolences online stating,

The Dodgers mourn the loss of Davey Lopes, who passed away today at age 80. Lopes was a member of the team’s record-setting infield of the 1970s and 1980s and one of the finest basestealers in MLB history. Our condolences go out to his family and friends.

Regarding Lopes amazing career, Major League Baseball released the following statement:

We are saddened by the passing of former Dodgers All-Star second baseman and World Series champion Davey Lopes.

Along with Steve Garvey, Bill Russell, and Ron Cey, Lopes was part of the historic homegrown Dodgers infield quartet which played together from 1973-81.

Lopes made four consecutive All-Star teams from 1978-81 and won the NL Gold Glove in 1978. He was the leadoff hitter and catalyst on three National League pennant-winners (1974, 1977, 1978) and the 1981 World Series champions.

Lopes also played on Postseason teams with the Cubs (1984) and Astros (1986), and spent time with the A’s during his 16-year career. He later managed the Brewers for parts of three seasons from 2000-2002. As a coach, Lopes was also a member of the 1998 NL champion Padres and the 2008 world champion Phillies.

He twice led the NL in stolen bases and finished with 557 career steals, which still stands 26th all-time.
