Former Carolina Panther Luke Kuechly Joining CBS Sports
His career was shorter than expected but no less impactful. However, after retirement from the NFL he has chosen a new career path. Therefore, former Carolina Panther Luke Kuechly will be joining CBS Sports. He will join the network, serving as an in-game college football analyst for select games. Kuechly is expected to be in the booth to call games, but will remain in the rotation for the Panthers radio network, per Joe Person of The Atlantic. He will likely work alongside former NFL player Logan Ryan.
The Carolina Panthers drafted Kuechly with the ninth overall pick of the 2012 NFL Draft. Prior to that he played football at Boston College and earned a consensus All-American honor two times. As a rookie he won the Associated Press 2012 NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year. The following year in 2013, he became the youngest recipient of the AP NFL Defensive Player of the Year award. Kuechly spent his entire eight year career with the Panthers until he retired in 2019. He worked as a Pro Scout for the Panthers from 2020-2021.
Kuechly was a student of the game. Known for his intense film study and attention to detail, Kuechly’s knowledge of the game made him one of the best linebackers ever. Some players said he studied film to the point where he knew what play opponents were going to run before the ball was even snapped. Kuechly could play outside linebacker but thrived as a middle linebacker. He was a “three-down” back so he didn’t need to come off the field in obvious passing situations. Throughout his career, he was a top impact player and was consistently voted into the NFL Top 100 Players.

Unfortunately for Kuechly he had to end his NFL career earlier than he would have liked. He chose to put his long-term health first as he had suffered at least three concussions during his career.
“In my heart, I know it’s the right thing to do…There’s only one way to play this game since I was a little kid, to play fast, to play physical to play strong. And at this point I don’t know if I’m able to do that anymore,” he said. “And that’s the part that’s most difficult. I still want to play, but I don’t think it’s the right decision.”
With his football knowledge, fans will be lucky to have him calling games. But in the meantime, Kuechly is eligible for the Hall of Fame this year. And despite his shortened career, many around the league believe he should be a first ballot honoree. I completely agree with them.
