For The First Time The MLB Has Back To Back MVPs With Ohtani And Judge

We probably all could guess who would be the NL MVP for 2025. However, the AL MVP was much more highly contested. But in the end the reigning MVP’s set a new precedent. For the first time the MLB has back-to-back MVPs with Shohei Ohtani (NL) and Aaron Judge (AL). Ohtani gained the unanimous vote for his third straight MVP (two straight in the NL) and fourth in the last five years. Judge won his second straight AL MVP edging out Seattle Mariners’ catcher Cal Raleigh.

Both Ohtani and Judge have established themselves as world class baseball players and this is their time to shine. The votes for Ohtani have been unanimous every time. He’s the only player in MLB history to be voted for unanimously multiple times. Only Barry Bonds had been voted MVP three times in a row (2001-2004) and earned seven total MVPs. Ohtani is already on his fourth MVP and the two-way player still has plenty of time to break Bonds’ record of seven MVPs.

As for Judge this is his second straight MVP and has a total of three so far in his career. That makes him the 13th player to have three MVPs. But it was a tough battle for him to get his second consecutive MVP as he had to clash with Cal Raleigh. Raleigh had an impressive season being regarded as one of the best catchers in the game. In 2024 he was both a Gold Glove winner and the AL’s Platinum Glove winner. He became the seventh player ever to have a 60-homer season in 2025.
However, Judge was able to pull ahead of Raleigh in the voting by leading his league and all of MLB in batting average (.331) while hitting 50 homers. And drove in an AL-best 125 runs.

Of course both men were thrilled to receive the prestigious award and made the following comments:
“The biggest thing,” Ohtani said through an interpreter of this 2025 win, “is obviously being able to win the World Series. That’s first and foremost. You know, it’s icing on the cake to be able to get an individual award, being crowned MVP, but I just really appreciate the support from all my teammates, everybody around me, my supporting staff.”
“I always would joke around with my parents in the backyard or when I was playing Little League that one day I would get a chance to be in the Major Leagues,” Judge said. “I never thought it’d be something like this. It’s just truly incredible. Always chase your dreams.”
In addition to the MVPs, they also each won the NL and AL Hank Aaron Award and made the All-MLB First Team. We wish a heartfelt congratulations to two generational talents on making MLB MVP history by repeating from one season to the next!
