Fernando Tatis Jr. Has Made an Impression Not in Right Field but at Second Base and We Like It

He’s always an exciting player to watch with his incredible speed and agility. How many times have we seen him run down a ball that looked completely uncatchable. Or how often did we think he’s never going to get there in time to make a catch? In other words, it’s been a pure joy watching him work out in the field. But this season Fernando Tatis, Jr. has made an impression not in right field but at second base and we like it. He has kept his superman cape on but just in a different part of the diamond.

As Tatis himself commented, “Yeah,” Tatis said with a wide grin on Sunday morning. “Looked clean last night. Just the quick action, the quick chances, staying on my feet,” Tatis said. “All of that.”

Despite having accepted his role in the outfield, Tatis has shown just how much loves playing infield. Nevertheless, even though fans may enjoy watching his electric playing at second base, this will not remain the norm. However, the Padres believe that he’s their best option to back up at the position, with Sung-Mun Song currently on the injured list. Meanwhile, Jake Cronenworth plays second base but fills in as shortstop whenever Xander Bogaerts needs a break.

This was confirmed by manager Craig Stammen who said, “[Tatis] is going to play right field most days. But when Xander needs a day off or when Jake needs a day off, he’s probably our best option to play second base at the moment.” So everything is cool, right? No big deal. Well since it’s Tatis involved of course there are some additional factors at play.

Tatis was not always a right fielder, he actually started as a shortstop. But in such a demanding position there are always injury concerns. And his play at the position wasn’t always clean. Despite his cannon for a right arm, Tatis made his share of throwing errors as a shortstop. But it didn’t really matter because the San Diego Padres envisioned him as playing in right field. So, he made the switch, full-time, after the Padres signed Bogaerts to shortstop prior to the 2023 season.

Tatis has won two Platinum Glove awards at right field in three seasons showing his excellence in making that change. But it doesn’t change the fact that he also loves playing infield. He has an elite arm as he demonstrated once again this past Saturday in a double-play turn that was clocked in at 84.8 mph. So for now we’ll enjoy the ride at second base for as long as it lasts!
