Fernando Tatis Jr Exits Game Against Brewers With Left Tricep Contusion

This season for the Friar Faithful has been nothing short of a rollercoaster. The ball club has found itself going from above to back down to .500 (and sometimes below); for the last several weeks. But even with inconsistency San Diego still finds itself in the hunt for a playoff spot. Yet, in tonight’s game against Milwaukee the team got quite the scare. The Padres Fernando Tatis Jr exited the game against the Brewers with a left tricep contusion.

Tatis is one of the backbones of the Padres team. A guy with great defensive and batting skills. And a leader that can motivate the troops whether he’s hitting a home run, stealing bases or energetically cheering from the dugout.

So then, seeing him exit stage right, is not what anyone in San Diego wants to deal with or see. Nevertheless, contusions, or bruises, are one of the most common sports injuries. Contusions are second only to strains as a leading cause of sports injuries. Most contusions are minor and heal quickly, without taking the athlete away from the game. Severe contusions, however, can cause deep tissue damage and lead to complications that may prevent an athlete from being able to play sports for months.

And as Boulder Centre for Orthopedics and Spine notes, “a Contusion causes swelling and pain, and limits joint range of motion near the injury. … The injured muscle may feel weak and stiff.” So as one can see, not the best situation for an individual needing to be very active.

However, what about tricep contusions? Is there a sort of known timeframe for this type of injury? In all honesty, depends on severity. William Morrison M.D. of Healthline says, “Recovery time can range between a few days to a few weeks.” While Cleveland Clinic adds, “Moderate to severe muscle contusions may take four to six weeks to heal. Mild muscle contusions take much less time — usually five to seven days.”

In the case of Tatis, hopefully his injury falls in the “mild” category. And he’ll just need some time to let the swelling subside and what not. Fernando was hit by a 93mph fastball pitch thrown by Milwaukee’s Colin Rea. Landing right smack on the left arm.

Immediately Tatis was visibly in pain. With manager Mike Shildt and trainers rushing out to check on him. Trainers had him testing to see if he could wiggle his fingers and move his hands. But ultimately he left the game.

We are sure San Diego’s medical team will take great care of Tati. With numerous tests to figure out the correct treatment. Helping him get back to work as fast and safe as possible.

But for the now the rest of the team must focus. There is still two more games against the Brewers to play. Then a series against the Nationals before hitting the road to face off against the Red Sox and World Series champions, the Texas Rangers.
