Falcons Michael Penix Jr. Will Undergo Season-Ending Knee Surgery to Repair His ACL

There are a lot of components that go into a team being able to win consistently and be successful. One being remaining healthy. Unfortunately for Atlanta they just received yet another blow when it comes to injuries. On Wednesday it was confirmed that Falcons quarterback Michael Penix Jr. will undergo season-ending knee surgery to repair his ACL.

Penix Jr. has had many struggles when it comes to getting hurt and needing to work his way back to the field. This is nothing knew and even the Falcons no doubt were aware of the risks. Literally, since college to now, injury roadblocks keep derailing Michael. Here’s just a quick summary of his shoulder as well knee injuries:

College Career:

• 2018 Indiana | Torn ACL
• 2019 Indiana | Shoulder
• 2020 Indiana | Torn ACL
• 2021 Indiana | Shoulder

Pro Career:

• 2024 Atlanta Falcons | Lingering Knee Issues
• 2025 Atlanta Falcons | Season-Ending ACL

As one can see, this is a guy that has battled through a lot. Hopefully moving forward Michael will be able to stay healthy. Falcons offensive coordinator Zac Robinson made a brief comment on quarterback Michael Penix Jr.’s season-ending injury. He says,

“We’re obviously sick about it. Mike’s our guy. He’s handled adversity before, and he’ll handle it as well as he can. He has a great support staff. … We’re rallying around him. But obviously we just feel sick about it. We know that he’ll bounce back stronger than ever. He’s handled this stuff before.”

It’s really tough to see a guy go down yet again like this. Especially, one who works hard like Michael. But you can’t predict injuries, when or how they will happen. NFL Network’s Ian Rapaport reported further on Penix Jr.’s situation, he says,

“Falcons QB Michael Penix Jr does, in fact, need surgery to repair his ACL, with 9 months of recovery, at least, coming. He’s sought the opinion of experts, including from Dr. Neal ElAttrache. Penix has an ACL sprain, but full reconstruction is needed.

The timeline for Michael Penix’s ACL surgery puts him right up against the start of the 2026 season. Nine months from now is mid-August. At the least, Atlanta will have to have a secure backup plan in case all does not go as anticipated.”

With Michael Penix Jr. undergoing season-ending knee surgery, the Atlanta Falcons are back in a position they’d planned to avoid: With another quarterback conundrum on their hands. Additionally, wide receiver Drake London is expected to miss the Falcons’ game this weekend in New Orleans. There’s talk and hopes that he may be available for Week 13.

In the aftermath of quarterback Michael Penix Jr.’s injury, the Falcons named Kirk Cousins as their starter, signed Easton Stick to the active roster as the backup and signed Kyle Trask to the practice squad as an emergency third.
