Falcons’ Michael Penix Jr. Suffered Knee Injury Against Panthers Placed On IR
He’s no stranger to season-ending injuries during his collegiate football career. Moreover, unfortunately, it looks like he may have been struck with yet another one. The Atlanta Falcons’ quarterback Michael Penix Jr. suffered a knee injury against the Carolina Panthers and has been placed on IR.
How bad is it? Will he return? As of right now it hasn’t been confirmed if he will miss the rest of the season. But since he is now on Injured Reserve he will have to miss a minimum of four games.
The Atlanta Falcons organization confirms all of the above with the release of an official statement. It reads as follows:
“Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Penix Jr. suffered a left-knee injury in Sunday’s game against Carolina,” the team said in a statement released Monday. “We are working through the medical process to determine the severity of the injury. He will be placed on the reserve/injured list and miss a minimum of four games. With the move, Kirk Cousins will assume the starting quarterback role for the Falcons at this time.”
Head coach Raheem Morris confirmed that Penix is going to seek a second opinion on the injury on Tuesday. He then went on to express his sympathies for the second-year quarterback:
“Hurting for the young man, especially with how well he was playing at the beginning of that football game, really finding his groove,” Morris said. “I liked his week of preparation. I like the way he went through everything. I like how he was prepared at a very high level. I like how he took a lot of ownership on it last week and really was ready to have a bounce-back week. It’s heartbreaking for him to go out and get hurt.”
Injuries are always unfortunate but Penix seems to have had more than his fair share of injuries.
Falcons’ Michael Penix Jr. Suffered Knee Injury Against Panthers Placed On IR
During his college career he tore his ACL in 2018. And in 2019 he missed the final four games with a shoulder clavicle fracture. In 2020 he re-tore his right ACL and he missed the remainder of the 2021 season. After suffering a separated shoulder A/C Joint in October. Earlier this season he missed a game due to a knee injury and it appears he may have aggravated that bone bruise in Sunday’s loss.
Kirk Cousins came into the game in the third quarter after Penix hurt his knee. Penix was expected to develop behind Cousins, a veteran of 14 seasons. However, Cousins was benched in Week 16, due to performance issues. Now he is back at the helm but his job may be more difficult than anticipated. Wide receiver Drake London will miss at least one week after suffering a PCL sprain on Sunday. Sitting at 3-7 and third place in the NFC South things look gloomy for the dirty birds.
