F1 Cancels First Practice of Las Vegas Grand Prix- What Happened?

Las Vegas is becoming THE premiere hot spot for all sports enthusiasts and lovers. This weekend The Strip will experience the first ever Grand Prix held in the city; however, it is not without its trials. There’s been a few issues. Plus, out of nowhere the F1 cancels first practice of Las Vegas Grand Prix.

What is going on? Well, there’s a problem with the street and path the racers are planning to take during the course. Not good.

However, this is what practice is for, right? To iron out all the kinks. So that, fans can just watch an exhilarating race with no hiccups. Moreover, Formula1 is all over this issue, and quickly fixing it. Regarding the practice cancellation, Formula1 states,

“Following an FIA inspection, it was found a concrete frame around a manhole cover had failed during FP1.

The FIA are commencing checks on all other covers across the circuit. Any changes to scheduling will be advised in due course.”

Good. Furthermore, Las Vegas journalist, Mike Akers had some more details to add about this sporting event situation. Akers says,

“Roads around the 3.8-mile Las Vegas Grand Prix track being shut down ahead of tonight’s practice rounds. Only permitted vehicles are now being allowed to travel on the Flamingo bridge over Koval into the resort corridor. A loose drain cover the culprit for the first practice session being canceled.

Caught up w/ LVCVA CEO Steve Hill at the F1 pit building. He called the valve cover incident disappointing, but was grateful they have a team and plan in place ready to address any contingency that might occur.

F1 and LVGP officials issue joint statement on the decision to close fan zones prior to Las Vegas Grand Prix free practice 2 taking place after a multiple hour delay, following the on track water valve cover incident.

The Las Vegas Valley Water District valve covers usually located along the track were replaced before practice by race officials w/ new ones to meet Las Vegas Grand Prix specifications, per source. The LVVWD valve covers will be reinstalled after the race.”

What an ordeal! However, we are happy to see safety for fans and drivers being front and center. Looking forward to an exciting Grand Prix with first race beginning November 18!
