Exciting Offensive Scoring Festival Between Bills And Lions
This AFC vs. NFC clash was expected to be a battle of epic proportions. A high-flying offense against a rough and tough defense. Yes please! But as it turned out the game became an exciting offensive scoring festival between the Buffalo Bills and the Detroit Lions. The defenses had their moments but it was really all about the offenses.
The Lions got the ball first and the Bills defense forced a quick three and out. Josh Allen then rapidly led his team down the field in 8 plays and 73 yards. During the drive Allen showed his ability to escape as he avoided being sacked. And he made throws on the run connecting with his receivers. He ran the ball in for the one yard touchdown on their opening possession. The Lions picked up a first down on their next possession but Jared Goff was sacked twice and the Lions had to punt again. Allen again led his team on another touchdown scoring drive. On the Lions third possession they came to life. With a few tough runs and a couple double digit yards receptions they scored their first touchdown of the game.
Again Buffalo marched down the field and scored their third touchdown of the game. But the Lions were in fight mode now and responded with a score of their own. They pulled off a trick play with offensive lineman Dan Skipper who reported as eligible. Goff tossed a nine-yard pass to Skipper for the touchdown. After that Allen threw a 64-yard bomb to Keon Coleman putting the Bills at the DET 3. A false start penalty pushed them back to 3rd & 6 at DET 6. Buffalo had to attempt a 24-yard field goal and missed wide right.

The Lions had three straight completions then three straight incompletions. They attempted a 52-yard field goal, it was no good wide left. Buffalo had 36 seconds and two timeouts left but on their final play the clock ran out. So they had no opportunity to try a field goal kick. At halftime the score was 21-14 with the Bills leading.
During the opening third quarter drive Allen handed the ball off to James Cook. He wiggled his way through the defense and ran the ball down the field despite being grabbed by the hair. He made it all the way to the end zone after a 41-yard dash. Detroit tried running the ball but after Goff was sacked they were forced to punt. The Lions brought the rush on the Bills’ next drive, pressuring Allen. Allen used his legs to pick up a couple first downs. However, the Lions shut down the run game forcing the Bills to punt for the first time in the game halfway through the third quarter.
Detroit had some momentum going on their next drive until they committed the first turnover of the game. Amon-Ra St. Brown caught the ball but fumbled it and it was recovered by Buffalo. They made the Lions pay for the mistake with a 3-yard touchdown score by Khalil Shakir. With the score at 35-14 this was the largest deficit the Lions had this season. St. Brown redeemed himself on the Lions next drive. Goff was under duress but still managed to complete a couple of passes. But the big one came when he found St. Brown down the field who took it 66 yards for the touchdown.
Buffalo Halts Lions Comeback Attempt
Buffalo’s defense got after Allen, flushing him from the pocket forcing him to throw on the run. They held the Bills to a 50-yard field goal. The Lions took advantage of the Bills depleted secondary marching down the field. Jahmyr Gibbs had a quick dump off pass and ran it in for the touchdown. Detroit went for the onside kick which Buffalo recovered and set up 1st & 5 at DET 5. They scored the touchdown on the next play. But of course the Lions came right back and scored another touchdown. And the Bills settled for a 41-yard field goal.
Detroit scored another touchdown and nearly recovered the onside kick. But Buffalo came up with the ball and held on for the 48-42 win. This was the highest offensive scoring game of the season.
