Every ALDS and NLDS Series Tied 1-1 for First Time in MLB History
This day had to come at some point. And really none of us can be too surprised because of what we witnessed during the last half of the regular season. For weeks things have been unbelievably TIGHT between teams vying to be the ones to hoist a trophy. With meaningful games occurring right up until the final matchups of the season to decide who was in or out of postseason contention. Now this trend seems to be continuing on into the playoffs. After the final game twos were played on Monday, every ALDS and NLDS series is tied 1-1 for the first time in MLB history.
Wild. You just normally do not see this happening. Some teams just always have more of the upper hand. But not this year. Every team in the thick of the playoffs are battling.
Over in the National League, the Phillies and Mets have exchanged blows every game with the lead changing hands throughout all nine innings. The Mets took game one and the Phillies came back to win game two. Furthermore, the Los Angeles Dodgers versus San Diego Padres series also fed families. It seemed like the Padres would win game one, but Ohtani’s game-tying home run swifted momentum helping the blue men win 5-7. However, the very next day, San Diego put belt to bat and annihilated LA 10-2.
Over in the American League, same vibe. Split series going down between the Royals and Yankees. As well as Detroit Tigers and Cleveland Guardians. The Royals and Tigers definitely surprised some, but they executed good “quiet” offseason moves to get stronger. Both teams started the season extremely well and they have maintained momentum.
The Yankees success started with the acquisition of Juan Soto. Soto and Judge became a power duo and together helped the Yankees amass 94 wins. As for the Guardians, they lost icon Terry Francona at the helms and picked up a new manager, Stephen Vogt. Like many, we were excited to see Vogt be the skipper and he’s done a masterful job in the role this season. All of these teams made moves to get this point. All of them very evenly matched.
Which is exactly what fans want. Great competition. Great games.
These division series are proving that having different teams in the mix is good. Having teams in the league with talent spread out is top tier. And when teams really have to go to war it makes for excellent entertainment value. The product on the field is exactly what Major League Baseball should always be.

Nevertheless, the MLB did comment on this tied series phenomena. MLB.com reveals,
“To say that doesn’t happen often would be an understatement. In fact, 2024 is the first year in Division Series history in which all four series were tied 1-1 after their first two games. That’s pretty impressive for a postseason round that was first implemented as a one-off for the split 1981 season, returned in 1995 and has been in place ever since. If you’re wondering, teams heading home for Games 3 and 4 in a 1-1 series have won 29 of 44 times (66%) under the 2-2-1 DS format.
While 2024 marks the 31st season of Division Series play, it will be just the seventh year in which none of the four Division Series resulted in a sweep (2022 was the previous instance). In seven previous seasons, three of the four series — but not all four — wound up tied 1-1: 2002, 2003, 2011, 2013, 2015, 2021 and 2022. Only once before — in 2012 — have all four series gone the maximum five games.”
As one can see, this is going to be a great week! Which teams shall emerge victorious? Well beginning on Tuesday we will begin to find out. As the NLDS continues with Game 3.
