ESPN Will Televise Hall Of Fame Game For The First Time

I always look forward to the Pro Football Hall of Fame game. Not because it will be a contest of exciting plays, close calls and devious strategy. It’s never any of those things, lol. Instead it’s a reminder to me that the preseason is starting and the regular season will quickly follow. And for the fourth consecutive year, there will be three preseason games. However, another change is that ESPN will televise the Hall of Fame Game for the first time ever. From 1971-2005, the Hall of Fame Game was televised nationally by ABC. In 2006 ABC’s sports division was merged with ESPN.

In the Hall of Fame Game’s 52-year history, this marks the first official broadcast on ESPN. The game will be broadcasted live on Thursday, Aug. 1, at 8 p.m. ET on ABC and ESPN from Canton, OH. Featured in the game will be the Houston Texans vs Chicago Bears which will kick off the National Football League’s 105th season. And the announcing team will be Troy Aikman (Game Analyst) Joe Buck (Play-By-Play) and Lisa Salters (Lead Sideline Reporter). Aikman and Buck set a record at the start of Week 1 in the 2023 season. They became the NFL’s longest-tenured network broadcast team. With their 22 seasons together they surpassed the dynamic duo of Pat Summerall and John Madden who worked together for 21 years (1981-2001).

Lisa Salters has her own impressive football pedigree. In April 2012, she was named the sideline reporter for Monday Night Football. She has now become  the longest-tenured sideline reporter in MNF history. So the ESPN broadcast should be a flawless production with this team on the call.

Pro Football Hall of Fame President Jim Porter had this to say about the game:

“This game features two teams that finished the 2023 season strong and have key pieces in place for 2024. Bears fans have always supported their Hall of Famers, and they can welcome three more who will be enshrined in Canton this year, while Texans fans can see the franchise’s first Hall of Famer up close as part of the game and Enshrinement Weekend. The Pro Football Hall of Fame could not be any more excited about this year’s matchup — and this year’s class.”

Further, this will be the Bears’ sixth trip to Canton, with their most recent in 2018. The Texans’ lone appearance in the Hall of Fame Game came in 2002, before the franchise’s inaugural season.

This year’s inductees are: Devin Hester, Steve McMichael, Julius Peppers, Andre Johnson, Dwight Freeney, Randy Gradishar, and Patrick Willis.
