ESPN Planning to Replace Summer ‘Sunday Night Baseball’ With ‘Women’s Sports Sundays’

Women’s sports has definitely boomed in this modern era. In fact, it is a sector of the industry that is slapping smiles on the faces of all those investing. Forbes revealed that, “Women’s sport sponsorship is growing 50% faster than men’s major leagues, and is exceeding return on investment expectations.” With such growth, many sports networks are making moves in order to showcase female athletes and get a piece of the pie. In this vein, ESPN is planning to replace summer ‘Sunday Night Baseball’ with ‘Women’s Sports Sundays.’ A first of its kind weekly primetime franchise showcasing the best of women’s sports in premium windows.

This decision on the part of ESPN leads to a few questions. Such as, which sports will be highlighted and broadcast during Women’s Sports Sundays? And why the change?

Well, the program represents one of the biggest investments in women’s sports programming by a major sports-media provider, and follows a surge of interest in multiple leagues. The new franchise will be replacing “Sunday Night Baseball” and will be a hub to focus on the top matchups in the WNBA and NWSL. Executives believe the block could become a new thriving franchise.

Susie Piotrkowski vice president of women’s sports programming and espnW says, “Sunday is a day of the week when we see a ton of our best women’s sports programming, and we will have events outside of our primetime window.”

Therefore, two months worth of women’s sports is coming up for fans. ESPN plans to run nine weeks of “Women’s Sports Sundays” and expects to surround the games with bespoke studio programming that could rely on talent already assigned to coverage of either league. Furthermore, there are some hopes of running a similar destination during other times of the year when pivotal women’s sports events take place.

Rosalyn Durant, ESPN’s executive vice president, programming & acquisitions confirms that the sports giant is all in on women’s sports. And consider the move to be one that can have lasting impact. Durant firmly states, “‘Women’s Sports Sundays’ isn’t an experiment. It is a flag in the ground, and a continuing commitment.”
