ESPN Announces 2.5 Million Watched Liberty Defeat Lynx and Win First Championship
So how did the ladies fare this year? What were the viewership numbers for the final game of the season? Well, ESPN announces that 2.5 million watched the Liberty defeat the Minnesota Lynx and win their first championship.
The final series was a thriller. Both teams exchanging blows and forcing a game 5. Even during the winner-takes-all 5th game the teams end up tied once regulation ended. In OT the Liberty went up and would not lose their lead. And with that New York started spreading the news… they are the 2024 champions.
And a few million tuned in for it, which is an increase from last year. Actually it is the biggest audience for a Finals game in over two decades.
According to Reuters there is only one WNBA finals game that beats Liberty vs Lynx. And that game went down back in 1999. When Britney Spears and TLC and Cher topped the charts, Prince’s song was all over the radio, people feared Y2K and watched The Sopranos. At the movie theater people of the 1900’s saw: “The Matrix,” “The Blair Witch Project,” “Fight Club,” “10 Things I Hate About You,” “American Pie,” “Being John Malkovich” and “The Iron Giant.”

But we digress, regarding Game 5’s viewership and rating and the most watched games of the 2024 season, Reuters reveals,
“The New York Liberty’s title-clinching victory over the Minnesota Lynx on Sunday was the most watched WNBA Finals game since 1999.The Game 5 thriller, won by the Liberty 67-62 in overtime, had a 1.1 rating with 2.15 million viewers on ESPN. The previous high was the deciding Game 3 of the 1999 WNBA Finals between the Houston Comets and Liberty that had 3.25 million viewers. It was the fourth largest audience ever for a WNBA Finals game, with the other three all broadcast on NBC.
Even as Sunday’s game decided the WNBA championship, it was just the seventh largest WNBA audience this season, counting the WNBA Draft. The six games this season with a bigger audience all involved rookie sensation Caitlin Clark of the Indiana Fever. That list includes four Fever games, the draft and the WNBA All-Star Game.”
