Eric Bieniemy Could Be Headed Back To College To Coach

After a successful stint as an NFL offensive coordinator, it’s apparently time for a change. Eric Bienemy could be headed back to college to coach. Per Adam Schefter, he is close to finalizing a two-year deal to join UCLA’s staff as the Bruins’ associate head coach/offensive coordinator.

Bieniemy was a former college running back for the University of Colorado Boulder Buffaloes. He was the named the 1990 Big Eight Conference’s Offensive Player of the Year. As well as, finishing third in Heisman Trophy voting and playing in the National Championship. In 2010, he was inducted into the school’s Athletic Hall Fame. The San Diego Chargers selected him in the second round of the 1991 NFL Draft.

He played in the NFL from 1991 to 1999 spending time with the Chargers, Bengals, and Eagles. After retiring from the NFL he was the running backs coach for the Buffaloes for 2001 and 2002. Then held the same position for UCLA from 2003 to 2005. He transitioned to the NFL as the running backs coach for the Minnesota Vikings. During his tenure Adrian Peterson led the NFC in rushing in 2007. In 2008 he led the league in rushing.

In 2013 he became the running backs coach for the Kansas City Chiefs. He rose to offensive coordinator in 2018. His first season as OC saw the Chiefs leading the league in yards per game and points scored. While with the Chiefs he won two Super Bowls, LIV and LVII. He signed a two year contract as assistant head coach and offensive coordinator with the Washington Commanders under head coach Ron Rivera. Rivera was replaced by Dan Quinn and Bieniemy was not retained.

Bieniemy’s name came up often as a candidate to be a head coach in the NFL, but has not been hired for the position. Although he has the resume something seems to be holding him back. Some speculate it’s due to some legal issues that took place in the past. In 1988 he was arrested for being in a bar fight due to someone calling him a racial slur. His last incident happened in 2001 when he was arrested for driving under the influence.

Whether it’s the legal issues that happened years ago or something else I don’t know. But the latest head coaching carousel saw eight positions filled and he didn’t have a chair when the music ended. Now it appears he’s headed back to the college ranks. Perhaps he and the NFL just need some time apart.
