But with a new season of baseball upon us, it is that time to revel in the newest star (or stars); to grace the greatest baseball video game ever. Right now all signs point to and confirm that Cincinnati Reds Elly De La Cruz is the cover athlete for MLB The Show 25!

Last year, Toronto Bluejays Vladimir Guerrero had the honor and privilege. And now one of the fastest men in the MLB will soon achieve this designation as well. Just how fast is he? According to SN, “Based on a speed of 30.5 feet per second, [Elly De La Cruz] would run a 3.93 40-yard dash. For reference, Texas’ Xavier Worthy broke the NFL Combine 40-yard dash record with a time of 4.21 seconds in 2024.” So the man comes complete with rocket boosters.

Furthermore, Cruz is a great choice for the iconic game because Elly can be quite the electric and dynamic player to watch on the field. Through 258 games in his career, he has stolen 102 bases and hit 38 home runs. Come on, you know you’re excited to bat with De La Cruz and zoom from first to third base. But we digress.

On Monday, Elly dropped the news all gamers had been anxiously waiting for. He took to social media to reveal he will appear on the game’s coveted cover. But that is not all. Moments after his grand proclamation the announcements just kept on rolling out! A couple of other rising young stars of Major League Baseball posted videos online saying they also are going to be the cover athlete for MLB The Show 25.

So along with Elly, Rookie of the Year Paul Skenes is getting the nod, along with Baltimore Orioles sensation Gunnar Henderson. What an entertaining ensemble. Basically, a ridiculous pitching ace, power bat and insane base stealer. Just inject the game now into our veins.

While this cover news has not been officially released yet by Sony San Diego Studios or the MLB. Three stars stepping forward like this is just too big of a leak to be ignored. But don’t fret official news and visuals regarding Cruz, Skenes and Henderson are certainly coming down the pipeline soon. As Forbes mentions,

“With information dropping in consecutive days, it would appear the official announcement and reveal—complete with cover reveal, release date, legends edition info, and pre-order details—is imminent. It could arrive as early as Tuesday, January 28. From a timeline standpoint, we’re in alignment with last year’s schedule. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. was revealed as the cover athlete on January 30, 2024. Because of that, it seems safe to say the announcement for MLB The Show 25 should come before the end of the week.

There are at least three cover athletes and likely one legend who will be on the cover of the special edition. SSDS could opt to have separate covers for the special edition, but with most games purchased digitally, that seems unlikely. It seems more likely there will be one cover featuring all three young stars. Users will likely have the option to choose if their home screen features De La Cruz, Henderson, or Skenes. Quite honestly, SSDS couldn’t go wrong with any of the three, even if they opted for the single cover athlete approach.”
