Edwin Diaz Injury: Is World Baseball Classic More Harmful Than Good?
The Edwin Diaz injury is raising many eyebrows and for good reasons. The injury occurs outside of the 2023 MLB season. It will have major implications and impact on how The Mets proceed. Therefore, is the World Baseball Classic doing more harm than good?
Well… it’s complicated. For those who love the sport of baseball, it’s just great in general. It’s exciting to see a FIFA meets OLYMPICS meets BASEBALL tournament play out on TV. It is all of your favorite players, representing their respective countries and seeing who wins. Amazing.
Furthermore, the WBC helps bring an end to the drought that is, postseason. The few months without baseball can be just drudgery. Therefore, the World Baseball Classic offers up some additional gaming as we wait for the official season to start. Having baseball on again and in the mix of sports headlines is just exhilarating and thrilling for the average baseball consumer.
However, as Diaz is clearly demonstrating; this event comes with risks. All teams risk having their best and oftentimes, most expensive investments playing in games; knowing full well they might get hurt. And if they do, they will be left scrambling how to resolve the new hole in their roster. Not good.
Edwin Diaz Injury: Is World Baseball Classic More Harmful Than Good?
Personally, this is why I am not a fan of the WBC. Although, I like the thought of more baseball, deep down I prefer having my guys healthy and ready to go for the season. Getting hurt and not being able to contribute to the team during the regular MLB season just seems like a waste. Especially, when you are chasing after a title.
When a title is on the line, it is all hands on deck. You NEED your roster focused and injury free. An unhealthy team is most likely not when a championship that year.
Nevertheless, freak accident injuries are not likely to stop the World Baseball Classic from happening anytime soon. Baseball fans from around the world watch it and love every moment of it. However, for Edwin Diaz and the Mets it’s another story. No one is cheering anymore.
Diaz went down suddenly during a game winning on field celebration; after knocking out the Dominican Republic. The Mets organization immediately announced that Edwin had injured his right knee after the game and would undergo an MRI. Then 15 hours later, the Mets state that imaging reveals, “a full-thickness tear of the patellar tendon in his right knee. He will have surgery today performed by Dr. David Altchek.”
Even though Díaz will miss the entire season, Steve Cohen seems positive the Mets will have no problem being contenders. Cohen via social media mentions, “Edwin Diaz is a great human being and a fierce competitor. All of us at the Mets are shaken but determined to sustain our quest for a great season. We wish Edwin a speedy recovery.”
Is the WBC a risk? Yes. The Edwin Diaz injury unfortunately proves that. However, as long as fans still want to see a ball hit with a piece of wood during and outside the MLB season; the World Baseball Classic will continue to exist.
