Edmonton Oilers Beat Panthers to Force Game 7 of Stanley Cup Final

Tomorrow night the Oilers will win in this building. I can see the future.”-Snoop Dogg. Well he called it. The Edmonton Oilers beat the Panthers to force a game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final.

This is certainly a comeback for the ages because in the Stanley Cup Final it just does not happen. Yes, there’s been teams in the NHL playoffs that have made things extremely interesting; bringing themselves from the depths of the abyss to a real bonafide chance to be a champion. The Oilers are now the 10th team to do so. Who are the other nine?

Well looking at history, in order to know them all you have to go all the way back to the 1900’s. And back some more. Literally over eighty years ago. Here’s a quick list:

  • 2014 Kings vs. Sharks, first round
  • 2011 Red Wings vs. Sharks, second round
  • 2011 Blackhawks vs. Canucks, first round
  • 2010 Flyers vs. Bruins, second round
  • 1975 Islanders vs. Flyers, semifinals
  • 1975 Islanders vs. Penguins, quarterfinals
  • 1945 Red Wings vs. Maple Leafs, Stanley Cup Final
  • 1942 Maple Leafs vs. Red Wings, Stanley Cup Final
  • 1939 Rangers vs. Bruins, semifinals

So since it’s only been done 10 times. It is something to really appreciate in sports. But it’s one thing to tie up a series; it is another to run the gamut and win it all.

The Oilers understand that thought very well. As soon as the last second ticked off the clock in game 6 the Edmonton Oilers team took to the social airwaves to fully herald the historical significance of tonight’s win. They state,

“The job is not done.

The Oilers become the 10th team in NHL history to rally back from a 3-0 series deficit & force a Game 7 with 5-1 win over Panthers in Game 6.”

So the Oilers, while thrilled, aren’t celebrating just yet. There’s work to do. And they are focusing to reach their ultimate goal. They want the Cup.

The Final is now tied with both teams having 3 wins a piece; after Edmonton overcame a 3 game deficit. This is only the 10th time this has happened in 211 opportunities in NHL history and the first in 10 years. Now, if the Panthers are feeling a little uneasy; fortunately for them, history tends to lend more towards the team that got off to a hot start. There’s been only one team in the Stanley Cup Final that went down 3-0 and came back to win it all. And that was the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1942. There’s been no one else.

So the Oilers have a chance to do the wildest thing. And the Panthers have a chance to stop it from happening. Game 7 shall be a good one. Catch the action on Monday.
