Eagles Trading C.J. Gardner-Johnson To Houston Texans

And the fast and furious trading in the NFL continues. This morning NFL.com made it known that the Philadelphia Eagles are trading safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson to the Houston Texans. According to NFL Network Insiders Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo, the Eagles are sending the safety to the Houston Texans in exchange for guard Kenyon Green. Philadelphia will also send a 2026 sixth-round pick to Houston in exchange for a 2026 fifth-round choice.

C.J. Gardner-Johnson was drafted by the New Orleans Saints in the fourth round of the 2019 NFL Draft. He had an excellent rookie campaign with a total of 42 combined tackles (34 solo), eight pass deflections, one interception, one forced fumble, and a fumble recovery in 16 games and seven starts. And he was named to the PFWA All-Rookie Team. After spending three seasons with the Saints he was traded to the Philadelphia Eagles on August 30, 2022. Along with a 2025 seventh-round pick to the Eagles. In return for a 2023 fifth-round pick (165th overall) and the lower of their two sixth-round picks in the 2024 NFL Draft.

He finished the 2022 season with one sack, 67 combined tackles (61 solo), six interceptions, and eight passes defended. And helped the Eagles get to the Super Bowl. In Super Bowl LVII he recorded four combined tackles in the Eagles 38–35 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. However, on March 20, 2023, the Lions signed him to a one-year $6.50 million contract with a $4 million signing bonus.

After that on March 14, 2024 he returned to the Eagles for a second stint. He finished the season with 59 combined tackles (35 solo), 12 pass deflections, a career-high tying six interceptions, and one touchdown in 16 games and 16 starts. Nevertheless he’s on the move again for the third season in a row. But he should fit in with the Houston defense being that he is a ball-hawk. He has 18 interceptions in his career. The Texans’ defense last year ranked second in interceptions (19).

Eagles Trading C.J. Gardner-Johnson To Houston Texans

Trading C.J. was not difficult for Eagles general manager Howie Roseman to do. He has a young and talented secondary so he could get good trade value for Garner-Johnson. Although he’s not likely happy to be traded but he did show some love for the city. He posted on his x.com account: “I love you Philly, we forever champions.”

And he posted a more extensive statement about his feelings on the whole situation.

Hopefully, Houston will become a home for him for awhile.
