Philadelphia needed to strengthen and reinforce their defense. The Jets have been riddled with injuries. Therefore, these two organizations came together to strike a deal. On Wednesday, the Eagles traded WR John Metchie to the Jets for CB Michael Carter II.
The Athletics’ Dianna Russini was among the first to confirm the trade news and murmurs. Russini reveals, “TRADE: The Eagles are sending WR John Metchie and a 2027 sixth-round pick to the Jets for CB Michael Carter II and a 2027 seventh-round pick, sources say.”
ESPN’s Adam Schefter added a bit more context as to why New York was adamant about picking up more help for their offensive strategies as well as struggles. Adam states,
“Jets are sending CB Michael Carter and a 2027 7th-round pick to the Eagles in exchange for WR John Metchie and a 2027 sixth-round pick, per sources.
This is now the third team John Metchie has been on since August, going from the Texans, to getting traded to the Eagles, to now traded to the Jets.
New York has dealt with injuries at wide receiver, with Garrett Wilson missing the last two games and Josh Reynolds placed on IR.”

Nevertheless, NFL and Philly fans probably are wondering what this move means exactly for the amazing Cooper DeJean. During a recent presser Vic Fangio had mentioned that he doesn’t really want to move Cooper to another position. Regarding Fangio and his thoughts on DeJean, NBC’s John Clark stated,
“Vic Fangio says Cooper DeJean is a “damn good” nickel CB. One of the best in the NFL. So he does not want to take one of The Best at a position and put him in another position, outside CB. He says they have talked about it but… They don’t want to do it. Vic said Cooper could also play safety. Just a good football player.”
Therefore, it remains to be seen how the Eagles plan to position their defensive players. However, Michael Carter was VERY interested in joining up with Philadelphia. Ian Rapaport reports, “Here’s how badly Michael Carter II wanted to join the champs: Sources say he agreed to delete the $5M guaranteed for injury in his 2026 contract year to complete the trade to the Eagles.” Well, with such an attitude, maybe this trade for Michael will be a good change of scenery; and he will return to his former high level of play.
