Eagles Breaking Tradition And Extending Linebacker Zack Braun

In the past, general manager Howie Roseman has been known for not keeping linebackers. He has let them walk in free agency rather than pay the big bucks for the position. Well things have changed in Philly this offseason. First they extended superman Saquon Barkley keeping him with the team for years to come. Now the Eagles are again breaking tradition and extending linebacker Zack Baun. He proved himself to be a one-man wrecking crew during the regular and post-season of 2024.

According to Adam Schefter the terms of the extension are as follows:

“Breaking: Eagles are re-signing All-Pro LB Zack Baun to a three-year, $51 million contract, including $34 million guaranteed at signing and additional $1.5 million in incentives and escalators, per sources. The contract instantly makes Baun one of the highest-paid LBs in the NFL.”

“Zack Baun’s journey with the Eagles: He signed a one-year, $3.5M deal in 2024, and now has earned a three-year, $51M contract in 2025 after a season as a Pro Bowler, First-Team All-Pro, and Super Bowl champion.”

Baun was selected 74th overall by the New Orleans Saints in the 2020 NFL Draft. He made his debut on Monday Night Football in September 2020 playing on specials teams becoming a role player for the Saints during his four year tenure. However, Roseman had his eye on Baun from the start of free agency in March of 2024. “He was a targeted player,” Roseman said. It was felt that the skills he showed in the rotational repetitions he gained with the Saints for four seasons would translate to Vic Fangio’s defense, but in a different position. He signed a $3.5 million deal with the Eagles and focused on ways he could help the team and bolster his career.

Under Fangio, Baun blossomed into a fierce linebacker who just made plays. He became a first-team All-Pro player, a Pro Bowl selection, and a finalist for The Associated Press NFL Defensive Player of the Year. And the hits kept coming in Super Bowl LIX, when he led the Eagles with 7 unassisted tackles. And he intercepted a Patrick Mahomes’ pass late in the first half in Kansas City territory. The Eagles offense turned it into seven points and a 24-0 lead at halftime.

Linebackers Coach Bobby King said during Super Bowl week, “He’s like a Swiss Army knife with about 12 different tools and blades on it. He’s got a chance to show those. Yes, he has improved those, but he’s a pro and he works at it every day.”

“I’ve loved this season and enjoyed the year more than anything on and off the field,” Baun said during the week of the Super Bowl.

So, all in all, everyone is happy with this extension and Philly’s defense is looking to be in good shape.
