Dynamic Duo Running Backs at an End as Detroit Lions Traded David Montgomery to Houston Texans
Alas NFL fans one of the best running backs groupings has come to an end. One would slash and dash while the other would pound and ground. The two became close to unstoppable because of their solid running attack. But now the dynamic duo running backs are at an end as the Detroit Lions have traded David Montgomery to the Houston Texans. In the trade Houston will receive David Montgomery in exchange for Houston’s fourth-round pick and a seventh-round pick along with offensive lineman Juice Scruggs.
Naturally acquiring Montgomery allows Houston to strengthen their backfield. He will likely play a large role in the Texans defense which will be good for him and the team. There had been rumors that Montgomery wanted out of Detroit because he was being less used in their offensive plans. He denied that report and Detroit Lions General manager Brad Holmes said that they love David and he’s a great player. Nevertheless, the trade has taken place, and Montgomery will be given a fresh start in Houston and for Houston. Last year the team’s offense ranked in the bottom half of the league.
He will be joining another veteran, Nick Chubbs along with second year running back Woody Marks. Marks had a good season last year amassing 910 yards from scrimmage. Working with Montgomery could create an interesting dynamic. But there’s no word on what’s going to happen to the other veteran Joe Mixon. He missed all of last season with a leg injury and has a history of being injured. Besides that question, the Texans will also have to figure out what kind of contract to give Montgomery. He has no remaining guaranteed money on his current contract. So, will they be willing to pay him?

In addition to trading Montgomery, the Detroit Lions have also released OL Graham Glasgow, which will save the team $5.5 million against the cap. Glasgow posted a thank you and goodbye on his x.com account. He said, “I’m grateful for the 7 years I’ve spent as a Detroit Lion. I wish the Lions, especially my former teammates, nothing but the best. I will always be a fan of the guys who I took the field with, and I’ll always be a fan of the team that changed my life.”
With the departure of Montgomery, Jahmyr Gibbs will have to shoulder more of the running back responsibilities. Last season he carried the ball 243 times and earned 1,223 yards. His slashing and high-level quickness style helps the Lions get into the end zone. Now the backfield will be his alone. The dynamic duo of Sonic and Knuckles (Gibbs and Montgomery) is no more but we’ll miss the way they complimented each other.
