Duke Star Cooper Flagg Leaves ACC Tournament After Suffering Ankle Injury
Not the sight you ever want to see in sports. One of college basketball’s most exciting players exited an important game with his head buried in a towel and with the assistance of a wheelchair in order to safely get to the exam room. Early on Thursday, Duke star Cooper Flagg leaves the ACC Tournament after suffering an ankle injury.
For basketball enthusiasts this is not a desirable scenario. Flagg was a player many looked forward to seeing during March Madness. However, now with this unfortunate ankle incident we are now dealing with March Sadness.
Cooper’s injury occurred during a matchup against Georgia Tech during Duke’s ACC Tournament quarterfinal. With about three minutes left in the first half, Flagg went up for a rebound when he landed and immediately seemed to be in great pain. Cooper instantly grabbed his ankle giving some indication as to where the injury occurred.
There was good news not too long after Flagg’s exit from the court. CBS Sports reported,
“Flagg was eventually helped off the floor with assistance back to the locker room area and later placed in a wheelchair to be taken to an exam room.
X-rays on Cooper Flagg came back negative after the Blue Devils’ superstar freshman left the team’s ACC Tournament quarterfinal game against Georgia Tech with a sprained ankle.”
There was some other good news coming from the court while Cooper was in the back. While the game looked grim at first. Duke rallied from a double-digit deficit without Flagg on the floor to win 78-70.
A very positive sign. Especially, since Flagg leads Duke in scoring, rebounding, assists and blocks this season. Therefore, this is a team that still has plenty of firepower and fight.

Nevertheless, after the game coach Jon Scheyer provided an update on what had so far been discovered about Flagg and his ankle. Therefore, regarding Cooper and whether he’ll play in Friday’s semifinal, Scheyer says,
“He sprained his ankle. X-rays were negative, which is great. We just have to understand there’s going to be swelling and see how he recovers and how we go from there.
Well, I already know how he’s wired. And look, to be honest with you, I would have to be, like, convinced by everybody in the locker room when I go back there that he should play. It’s not worth it. It just isn’t. Again, he was swollen already. It’s not about being ready to go tomorrow. That’s not the most important thing for us. We’ve got to see if we can get him right for this run that we can make in the tournament. But I would have to be really convinced that we should even consider seeing if he can go tomorrow. He may not be able to go anyway. He probably won’t be able to go anyway. But I think it’s a real long shot. A real long shot.”
Well, right now Duke is staying tight-lipped about the seriousness of Flagg’s situation. And we don’t blame them one bit. When they are ready to confirm more details, they will.
Nonetheless, Vegas has been turned on it’s head. Flagg, is currently a betting favorite to win National Player of the Year and the projected No. 1 pick in the 2025 NBA Draft. And such attention has been due to his performance and season being of historic proportions. Flagg is the first major conference freshman to lead his team in all five major statistical categories which hasn’t been seen since Ben Simmons did it for LSU in 2015-16.
So, Flagg has been ballin. And now we wait to see if he will be able to continue as the March Madness tournament looms.
