Drew Brees Injury-Says He’d Still Be Playing If Not For Surgery
If he could, he would still be playing. In an interview on the “Greeny” radio show the infamous 2005 Drew Brees injury was discussed and clarified. The injury is way worse than anyone imagined.
It’s hard to believe the great Brees suffered an almost career ending injury with his shoulder and rotator cuff; and still went on to play for over a decade! Moreover, throughout his career, Drew still racks up 80,358 passing yards (most in NFL history); and 571 passing touchdowns. In terms of iconic status, his passing TD numbers place him only behind Mr. 7 Rings; the GOAT… Tom Brady.
Nevertheless, Drew says it’s all true. Regarding his early 2000’s injury, Brees states,
“Look, I’ll let you in on a little fact. I don’t throw with my right arm anymore. My right arm does not work. So, when I throw in the backyard right now, I throw left-handed.
I can play pickleball because it’s below the waist. [However] anything above my shoulder I have a hard time with.
[Dislocating my shoulder] put me on the fast track to a degenerative shoulder and all kind of arthritic changes. If I could, I would absolutely still be playing.”

Sources confirmed with ESPN about Brees’ unfortunate loss of throwing ability. Adam Schefter reveals,
“Retired QB Drew Brees says that he’d still be playing if he could throw a football with his right arm but that that’s no longer possible because of the major shoulder injury he suffered in 2005.”
Drew Brees says despite the injury he was in good hands; especially with Dr. James Andrews. Andrews is the surgeon responsible for the repairs in Drew’s rotator cuff and shoulder. Thanks to this doctor’s efficient efforts, Brees is able to play until he is 42.
Having such a long career is an amazing feat. Dr. Nirav Pandya, an Associate Professor of UCSF Orthopedic Surgery; and an Injury Analyst for the Bay Area’s 95.7 The Game. Explains just why Drew’s career is astounding. Pandya explains,
“The descriptions of [Drew’s] injury in 2005 reported in public by the media (extensive labral tear and rotator cuff tear) made it quite remarkable he even came back to play in the NFL with a dislocated throwing shoulder. Eventually the joint does begin to wear down.
[Dree Brees played 15 years after the injury]. Therefore, it is very remarkable he was able to do so; it would be a career ending injury for most throwing athletes.”
Imagine… Drew Brees still playing in 2023? What could of been. However, Brees is still enjoying sports, being apart of charity events; and he was spotted with his family enjoying a Padres baseball game at Petco Park during the 2023 season.
