Dodgers Shohei Ohtani on His 101.7 MPH Pitch Against Royals

It has been quite the journey back to the mound for one of the MLB’s biggest stars. However, he is starting to look more and more comfortable hurling some straight up heat at batters. Giving the impression that he is getting back to the two-way player fans all know and love. In a matchup against Kansas City Ohtani threw the fastest pitch in his major league career. Now, the Dodgers Shohei Ohtani is speaking on his 101.7 mph pitch against the Royals and how he feels overall on his pitching performance.

You may have noticed we said this was the fastest pitch Shohei has thrown in the MLB. That’s because he’s thrown even faster. If you watched the last World Baseball Classic you may have witnessed it for yourself.

Yes, while pitching for Team Japan in the 2023 World Baseball Classic, Ohtani struck out Team Italy’s… you guessed it… Vinnie Pasquantino with a 102 mph heater. Pasquantino was also recent the recipient of Shohei’s 101.7 mph four-seam fastball that led to a double play. Ironic.

The irony isn’t lost on Vinnie either. He told the media, “I just saw the fastest pitches he’s ever thrown in his career — two of them are against me. His two hardest throws. I need to talk to him. I was hoping he’d get on first today so I could ask him. He got me in Japan a few years ago. He loves throwing me fastballs, and he doesn’t really throw that many fastballs.”

Ohtani also has a thought on his recent fastball to Pasquantino. In fact, he has an opinion on how he’s pitched so far. Through interpreter Will Ireton Shohei reveals,

“It’s something that I don’t think I would have been able to do in a live BP setting, so it’s nice to be able to hit this velo and see how my body reacts.

I felt pretty good about being able to come back and pitch well, especially considering when I first had the surgery — the second time through was a lot better in terms of recovery than the first time through. Just talking to the doctor, he was very confident that I was able to come back at full form.”

Well it sounds like Ohtani is feeling good on the hill. And is happy with his injury recovery progress. Plus, now fans will be able to see more hurling from All-Star Shohei as the season presses onward. Truly a win for baseball.
