Dodgers Shohei Ohtani Exits The Dodgers Game Early Due to Cramps

It’s been exciting to see this fan favorite two-way player back in action. But unfortunately his time on the mound has led to perhaps another setback. Is the increased load too much for Ohtani’s body? While he’s had some great outings, LA has been quite conservative in how they utilize their DH/pitcher and now things may have to be adjusted more. On Wednesday, another less positive outcome came to the fore before the halfway point of the day’s competition. The Dodgers Shohei Ohtani exits the Dodgers game early due to cramps.

Ohtani, 31, was making his seventh hurling appearance since returning from the elbow surgery that cost him last season as a pitcher. In his previous six appearances, he compiled a 1.50 ERA (two earned runs allowed) and a 4.33 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 12 innings.

Nevertheless, on Wednesday Ohtani was in the middle of an AB in the bottom of the fourth inning when the decision was made for him to exit the blue men’s matchup versus the Cincinnati Reds. Manager Dave Roberts and trainer Thomas Albert were on the field when Ohtani left early. Shohei had been uncharacteristically missing pretty badly with little control. Throwing multiple balls consecutively. ESPN’s Jeff Passan reports the scene stating,

“Shohei Ohtani has left his start in the middle of an at-bat after throwing six consecutive balls, two of which were yanked fastballs that were wild pitches.”

Baseball insider Alden Gonzalez followed up and backed up his colleague, Passan saying,

“Shohei Ohtani was removed from the mound with none out in the fourth inning from Cincinnati, after throwing six straight balls and getting a visit from a trainer. But cameras showed him sitting in the dugout, which might — might — be a sign it’s not a serious injury. We’ll see.”

While Ohtani’s night as his team’s hurler was obviously finished. It did not mean he still would not be contributing. The man still swings a seriously big bat. USA Today’s Bob Nightengale confirmed, “Shohei Ohtani stays in the game as the Dodgers DH.”

Furthermore, in about another hour fans were all able to breathe a sigh of relief. Ohtani’s injury was not arm related. Instead Ohtani left his start after a bout of cramping/tightness in his lower half.

Ohtani told reporters after the game that he felt cramping in his right hip as early as the first inning. But tried to pitch through it until it began impacting his delivery and command. He’s glad tomorrow is a day off.

At one point the Reds and LA were tied, but in the end Cincinnati would get the win. Defeating the Dodgers 5-2. Now Los Angeles will tend to Ohtani to see how to get him feeling his best.
