Dodgers Shohei Ohtani Could Pitch in May—Dave Roberts Says He’ll Be Same Pitcher
Los Angeles’ superstar has had to deal with some injuries. But his progress and recovery has been remarkable. As we all know, the guy can still hit like it’s no one’s business. In 2024, he impressed by starting his own 50-50 club. But what people are keeping an eye on is rather or not, he will be effective once again on the mound. Well, his manager believes he will. The Dodgers Shohei Ohtani could pitch beginning in May and Dave Roberts says he will be the same dynamic guy.
Shohei Ohtani shot to fame for being “a modern day Babe Ruth.” It wasn’t just the fact that he could pitch and demolish baseballs while at-bat. It’s the fact that he was a MVP caliber powerhouse at both positions.
But with injury, you never know if an athlete will ever quite be the same. Ohtani had surgery at the end of the 2023 season, for the second time in his career; which also resulted him not being able to pitch last year. But things are looking promising. Ohtani has been throwing bullpen sessions in anticipation of a return to the mound at some point early in the 2025 season.
In his career, Ohtani has gone 38-19 with a 3.01 ERA in 86 career MLB starts. And Dave Roberts strongly believes that fans can expect more of the same from Shohei. Roberts states,
“I think the velocity will be there, he’ll have a feel for his pitches. I’ve really never seen anyone as competitive as Shohei, so I would expect him to be the same pitcher, as he’s expecting himself to be the pitcher he was when he was healthy.”

As for an exact timeline or date for Shohei’s return to pitching, there isn’t one. It’s a day by day, week by week evaluation. As MLB.com revealed,
“Ohtani is likely to resume pitching in Major League games sometime in May, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said at DodgerFest.
‘It might be earlier,’ Roberts added, ‘but I think that the first thing I said earlier this offseason was it wasn’t going to be in the Japan Series. … Once he gets to Spring Training and we see where the throwing program is, I think we’ll just go from there.’”
Well, regardless of when he starts pitching again; it will be fun to see him hurling some pitches. Speaking of the Japan series. Don’t forget the 2025 regular season will begin with the Tokyo Series presented by Guggenheim at the Tokyo Dome, featuring the Los Angeles Dodgers on March 18.
