Doc Rivers is Departing as Head Coach of the Milwaukee Bucks
They won a title in 2021, but have since been searching for the right formula to repeat that same level of success. During this timeframe, Milwaukee’s coaching carousel has been turning rapidly. The franchise is now parting with their third head coach since winning a championship. On Sunday evening it was confirmed that Doc Rivers is departing as head coach of the Milwaukee Bucks.
It has been rough for Milwaukee and their fans. The team suffered 50 losses this year, while managing to garner only 32 wins. Good enough for the 11th spot in the Eastern Conference standings.
Furthermore, Sunday night the Bucks wrapped up their 2025-2026 season with yet another defeat. This time to the Philadelphia 76ers. Philly who is now the 7th seed in the East, enjoyed a victory at home winning 106-126.
Nonetheless, to try and stop this hemorrhaging of losses; the Bucks organization will look for someone new to lead their cavalry. ESPN’s Shams Charania broke the news of Rivers’ departure stating,
“BREAKING: Doc Rivers is departing as head coach of the Milwaukee Bucks, sources tell ESPN. After a 32-50 season, the Bucks will embark on their third coaching search in the last three years.
A summer of change begins for the Bucks as Rivers exits at 97-103 across three seasons in Milwaukee — two first-round exits and missing the playoffs and play-in this year. The Bucks will pay out Rivers on his eight-figure salary for the final year on his deal in 2026-27.”

NBA analyst and writer, Jake Weinbach added a little more intel by divulging,
“Doc Rivers is not expected to return as Bucks head coach with a front office role considered to be an option next season. Bucks assistant Darvin Ham, Heat assistant Chris Quinn, and former Grizzlies coach Taylor Jenkins would be notable candidates to replace Rivers in Milwaukee.
The Bucks and Doc Rivers are in the process of discussing an advisory role within the organization, per Shams Charania. Doc is reportedly leaving Milwaukee’s sidelines, but is still likely to remain with the franchise and serve out the final year of his contract.”
Additionally, the Bucks are also concerned about the future of their star player. Giannis has maintained that despite media speculation his loyalty is with Milwaukee. However, interestingly just two days ago via the Dan Patrick Show, Doc Rivers mentioned regarding Antetokounmpo, “If we had all the pieces here, I have no doubt he’d want to stay here. But we don’t. And so that puts him in a tough spot.” Well, we will see if the Bucks materialize the right pieces to fit with Giannis and find the right fit in a head coach.
