DIRECTV Holiday Bowl Moves from Petco Park to Snapdragon Stadium

The pets may go to Petco, but college football fans will be heading back to Mission Valley. Today it was announced that the DIRECTV Holiday Bowl will move from Petco Park to Snapdragon Stadium. Which will no doubt be a better experience for players and audiences alike.

Although renovated, Petco Park is not really setup that well for football games. To many who attend such special sporting events, no matter how Petco Park is transformed; or decorated, it still feels like a ballpark. Therefore, moving the Holiday Bowl over to Snapdragon Stadium just feels like the right vibe.

But still, this will be a bummer for everyone who just likes going to the Petco venue. It is one of the best ballparks in the country. So going there for any sport, concert or fan fest is just great times.

Nevertheless, the social channels for the DirecTV Holiday Bowl were among the first to herald the official announcement on Tuesday morning. Regarding the big move from the San Diego Padres’ home turf to Snapdragon. They state,

“We are excited to announce that the DIRECTV Holiday Bowl is moving back to Mission Valley! Starting this December, the game will be played at Snapdragon Stadium.

Moreover, the official press release contained a little more intel. Some nice historical tidbits, as well as a very hearty thank you to the city of San Diego and Petco Park for being such amazing hosts. The release mentions,

“The San Diego Padres and Sports San Diego jointly announced today that after two successful seasons hosting the Holiday Bowl at Petco Park (2022-23), the Holiday Bowl will be moving to Snapdragon Stadium beginning in December 2024.

The Holiday Bowl has been played in San Diego since its inception in 1978 and was hosted at San Diego Stadium/Jack Murphy Stadium/Qualcomm Stadium/SDCCU Stadium through 2019 until moving to Petco Park for the 2022-23 seasons (2020-21 games were not played).

‘The DIRECTV Holiday Bowl had a great run at Petco Park, and we are so appreciative to the San Diego Padres for being tremendous hosts,’ said Sports San Diego CEO Mark Neville. ‘The Holiday Bowl is an important event for San Diego, and the Padres were there for us when SDCCU Stadium was razed. Petco Park is an incredible venue, one for which our community is lucky to have.’”

Nice thoughts and sentiments. Yes, Petco Park is truly a jewel of San Diego and it was fun to have the Bowl as part of its history. Now some new memories can begin over at Snapdragon Stadium.
