Diana Taurasi Announces She Is Retiring After 20 seasons In The WNBA

GAME-CHANGER. LEGEND. ONE OF THE GREATEST. You tend to pick up such titles when you are a three-time NCAA champion, WNBA MVP and a six-time Olympic Gold medalist. And that’s only the tip of the iceberg of what you have actually achieved. However, time stops for none of us, and eventually the retirement bug shows up at the party. After one heck of a run, Diana Taurasi announces that she is retiring after 20 seasons in the WNBA.

Taurasi’s professional career has been one of the best the W has ever seen. She’s not only been a champion, but has put up some major points. Game after game. Here’s just a very short glimpse and overview of what her time in the WNBA has amounted to:

20 seasons

14 All-WNBA selections

11 All-Star selections

3 WNBA championships

All-time leading scorer

2X WNBA Finals MVP

10X ALL-WNBA First Team

2009 WNBA MVP

Moreover, what is also impressive is her longevity in the sport. While others have come and gone. Diana has had real staying power. Playing in her 20’s, 30’s and on into her 40’s.

The 42 year old, affectionately known as the “White Mamba” is the only player in WNBA history with more than 8K career points. How many does she have? She has 10,646.

Also, in 2023 Taurasi hit her 10,000 career point and did so in style. Having a career-high 42 points in regulation, with four rebounds and six threes. Additionally, this game made her the oldest player in WNBA history to drop 40.

Lebron James, one of the NBA’s greats and All-Time Scorer spoke to TIME Magazine on Taurasi’s legacy. What she has meant to the game, and the next generation coming up. He mentions,

“Just seeing her transcend the game, watching little girls want to play like her, her style, her flair, her bravado; you know, her swagger, it’s been an unbelievable treat. She’s one of the all-time greatest. It’s been an honor. All love.”

Nicely put by the King. Furthermore, the Women’s National Basketball Association also released a brief statement via social media about Diana’s retirement. The league states,

“After 20 years of playing in the WNBA, Diana Taurasi is officially retiring.

Thank you Diana for changing the game forever, all of the accolades could never amount to the type of person and edge you embodied when you stepped out there on the court.

One-of-One.”

WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert also had some expressions on Taurasi’s departure from the W. She states,

“Diana Taurasi is one of the greatest competitors to ever play the game of basketball on any stage. In a record-setting career that saw her play 20 seasons, score more points and make more three-point shots than any player in WNBA history, she has earned the unquestioned respect of players around the globe, delivered electrifying moments and captivated fans again and again. On behalf of the WNBA family, I thank Diana for everything that she has brought to the WNBA – her passion, her charisma and, most of all, her relentless dedication to the game. She leaves a lasting legacy and the future of the WNBA is in a great position because of her impact, that will be felt for generations to come.”

Yes, Diana was something else. Truly a marvel to behold on the court. Thank you so much for all the wondrous memories Diana Taurasi, and enjoy retirement.
