Devante Parker is Retiring After Nine NFL Seasons

When it is time, you just know. Another player is waving goodbye to the game that he, and all of us love. Wide receiver Devante Parker is retiring after playing nine NFL seasons. Parker is finishing his almost decade long NFL career with 369 catches for 5,266 yards and 27 receiving TDs.

Nevertheless, why guys decide to retire; the reasons are as numerous as the stars. Sometimes it is due to not having as much strength, speed and energy in the past. Or just being tired of tough traveling and schedule.

Devante Parker’s reason, however, is different. The former football player wants to be nearer and closer to his family. Especially, when it comes to his children. Can’t really fault a guy for that.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter is reporting on Devante’s retirement. He states,

“After nine NFL seasons, Eagles WR DeVante Parker has decided to retire, he said Monday night. As much as he looked forward to his time with the Eagles, Parker decided the time had come to spend more time with his family that includes his four children. ‘I want to see my kids, spend quality time with them,’ Parker said. ‘I want to be there for them whenever I can.’ The 31-year-old Parker is walking away from the NFL and looks forward to whatever is next, though he has no definitive short-term professional plans. ‘I’m just going to take things slowly,’ Parker said.”

Yes, take it easy Parker, and enjoy that time with your family. Nonetheless, some early days facts… Devante played college ball for Louisville. And he was the 14th pick in the first round back in 2015; selected by the Miami Dolphins.

However, Devante is not leaving without sharing a few thoughts and handing out a few thanks. When asked what he will miss about playing in the NFL, Devante reveals,

“The camaraderie. The brotherhood in the locker room on whichever team it was. Everyone always welcome me with open arms, and I appreciated them for that. I also appreciate the Dolphins for drafting me and giving me the opportunity. I always will have love for the Dolphins and their organization. And I want to thank all the teams, the Patriots and the Eagles, too. But the Dolphins were the first team, and I really want to thank them.”

Nice words and perspective. Regardless, of what comes next. Parker can be proud of the man he was on the field and off of it. His longtime agent says it’s been a real privilege to represent him and looks forward to working with Devante in the future. Agent Jimmy Gould, chairman of Management One, says, “It will continue to be an honor to represent DeVante as he moves forward toward that next chapter of his life.” Awesome. For now, Parker will just be enjoying family; but before long we may just see him in action again.
