They had been on a roll. However, all good things must come to an end. Yet, it was a fun ride to watch play out. Nonetheless, on Monday evening the Detroit Pistons ended the Charlotte Hornets Historic nine game win streak.

Yes, Charlotte was aiming to match their franchise record for consecutive wins (which is 10); but it was not to be. The Pistons narrowly snatched the glory from this year’s Hornets team winning 110-104. Tenses and emotions ran high between both teams and eventually a brawl ensued. Benches cleared, resulting in four players being ejected from the game.

However, the Hornets still have plenty to be proud of when it comes to their thrilling run. The last time the Hornets won more than seven games consecutively was the 1998-99 season. So this moment has almost been 30 years in the making.

Furthemore, less than a week ago in a matchup with the Houston Rockets, the Charlotte Hornets achieved an eight-game winning streak for the first time since December of the 1999-00 season. Additionally, the last time Charlotte won more than eight-straight games was April of the 1998-99 season, in which they achieved a nine-game winning streak. This season’s win streak is Charlotte’s first nine-game winning streak since that 1998-99 season. The longest winning streak in franchise history is 10 games.

Furthermore, as they took down the Rockets 109-99, it was Charlotte’s 12th game holding its opponent under 100 points this season. While Houston led the NBA in rebounds per game (49.1); Charlotte out-rebounded the Rockets 46-40.

Part of Charlotte’s recent winning success has been due to the efforts and proddings of their head coach. And the league has certainly taken note. The NBA announced,

“Phoenix Suns head coach Jordan Ott and Charlotte Hornets head coach Charles Lee have been named the NBA Western and Eastern Conference Coaches of the Month, respectively, for games played in January.

Hornets Head Coach Charles Lee has been named NBA Eastern Conference Coach of the Month for January.

Lee led the Hornets to an 11-6 record in January, tied for the most wins in the NBA last month. Charlotte was the only team to rank in the top 5 in offense and defense in Jan.”

Nice. Well, this shows what can happen when you draft the right player(s) and get the right coach for the job. The Hornets are next set to play the Atlanta Hawks, which should be another fun one to watch.
