Detroit Outlasted the Rams On Super Wild Card Weekend
Rapper Eminem opened the playoff game referencing Detroit’s sad playoff history. But there was nothing to be sad about when Detroit outlasted the Rams on Super Wild Card Weekend. The stadium was filled to the rafters with the loud, exuberant Detroit fans.
Detroit opened the game driving for a touchdown on their first possession. It looked like the Rams were going to do the same but Detroit’s defensed stiffened up in the red zone forcing the Rams to settle for a field goal. Detroit went back to work moving down the field with big gains on passes to Josh Reynolds and Jahmyr Gibbs. Gibbs finished the drive with a 10 yard touchdown run.
In an instant the first quarter was over and the Rams scored their first touchdown to start the second quarter. Matthew Stafford suffered an injury to his hand but continued to play. With all the early back and forth scoring it felt a lot like how the Browns vs Texans game started.
And Detroit kept the scoring going by answering with another touchdown. They were angry running and angry catching. The Rams couldn’t tackle them or stop them. When they got to the 2 yard line they went for it on 4th down. Sam La Porta made the catch at the back of the end zone.
The Lions defense had an issue with holding. They were grabbing jerseys and wrapping their arms around receivers prior to the ball getting to them. All the holding calls helped the Rams to move down the field. Anyway the back and forth scoring continued as the Rams scored a touchdown with about 4 minutes left in the half. In addition to holding, the Lions defense gave up too many big pass plays. It was the last score of the half with Detroit leading 17-21.

The scoring bonanza petered out in the second half with the only Lions score being a field goal. Whereas the Rams scored a field goal in the 3rd and 4th quarters. However, they failed to take the lead on their last possession. That allowed the Lions to run out the clock and get the 23-24 victory.
This was Detroit’s first playoff win since 1991 ending the 32 year drought. As for the Rams they exceeded expectations by making the playoffs. It was a great game of two evenly matched teams but somebody had to lose. And no doubt Detroit fans were glad it wasn’t them for a change. Congrats to the Lions and their fans, this win was a long time coming.
