Detroit Lions Stunned By Frank Rangow Announcing His Retirement From The NFL

A center is a quarterback’s best friend as he keeps him upright and protected from sack-hungry defenders. Quarterback Jared Goff has had the luxury of having one of the best in the business for the last seven years. However, on Monday the Detroit Lions were stunned by Frank Ragnow announcing his retirement from the NFL. Trying to replace such an important piece of the offense is always a challenging task. However, the Lions did draft second-round pick Tate Ratledge who has been taking most of his offseason reps at the center position.

Ragnow took to social media to make his announcement and this is what he posted on Instagram:

“These past couple of months have been very trying as I’ve come to the realization that my football journey is ending and I’m officially retiring from the NFL. I’ve tried to convince myself that I’m feeling good but I’m not and it’s time to prioritize my health and my families future. I have given this team everything I have and I thought I had more to give, but the reality is I simply don’t. I have to listen to my body and this has been one of the hardest decisions of my life. The Lions organization has been absolutely incredible throughout this process and I can’t emphasize this enough how grateful I am for this team and all the fans. It was an absolute honor going to battle for you all.”

Ragnow’s statement emphasizes the importance of listening to your body and taking the necessary steps to protect it. Clearly, he loved playing the game but was forced to recognize his limitations rather than inflict more damage on himself.

During his career Ragnow battled with multiple injuries including a toe injury that lingered throughout several seasons. Nevertheless he didn’t let the injuries slow him down as he went on to play in 96 games. He also earned four Pro Bowl selections, and three second-team All-Pro designations, all in seven seasons. The 33rd team provided an interesting stat regarding Ragnow: Frank Ragnow will go down as one of the best centers of his era. Ragnow is the only NFL center to play 2,000+ pass block snaps and allow less than 5 sacks since 2020.”

They also detailed what the Lions offense was like with and without Ragnow on the field, and the differences were stark. So the Lions will have to move forward in 2025 without their highly effective center. Nevertheless we wish a hearty congratulations to Ragnow on his retirement and best wishes as he starts a new chapter of his life.
