Detroit Lions Delivered a Thursday Night Thrashing

Who would have thought it? The Detroit Lions delivered a Thursday night thrashing and it was exquisite. They ended the second quarter with a 27-3 lead. But let me back up for a moment. On their opening possession Jared Goff threw an interception. Green Bay was able to capitalize on it by kicking a field goal. And that was the highlight for Green Bay.

Goff, came back on the next possession and promptly marched the Lions down the field for the touchdown. It was rather alarming seeing the difference in play on the two possessions. Almost as if Goff had an evil twin on the first possession and a mastermind genius on the second possession. The transformation was stark and the evil twin was banned from the rest of the game. I give it up to Goff for keeping his cool and not letting the opening mistake ruin the rest of the game. His play was smooth and efficient and the offense just kept rolling along.

For Jordan Love the opposite could be said. By the time the game went to halftime the Packers had a total of 21 yards. Love was constantly harassed and hit by the Lions defense. He had a pass that was tipped and intercepted. The Lions scored a touchdown thanks to the turnover. Midway through the second quarter the Packers finally got a first down. On the other hand, the Lions didn’t have to punt until the second quarter. Things never improved for Love. His offensive line didn’t give him much protection or time to throw the ball. Packers’ fans were booing as the players left the field at the half.

Although the final score was 34-20 the Lions had complete control of the game. From start to finish they easily managed all aspects of the game. They did a lot of things right. These are not the Detroit Lions we have been used to seeing. These guys mean business and look like the team to beat. They beat the Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium. They crushed the Packers at Lambeau field. In my opinion those are statement wins.

Their Thursday night victory moved them into first place in the NFC North. Fun Fact: The last time they won the division it was the NFC Central. They have never won the NFC North. Will they take the title this year?

The motor city can finally be proud of their team. In the words of Kirk Herbstreit, “… damn.. Detroit you gotta really good lookin team!”
