Detroit Lions Clawed Their Way To Victory In Season Opener
Arrowhead Stadium was stunned into silence last night. The Detroit Lions clawed their way to victory in the season opener. It was a tight one with the final score being 21-20. However, the Lions made enough plays to hand a defeat to the defending Super Bowl champions. Both teams played well enough overall but of course some mistakes were made.
The Chiefs receivers had too many dropped passes. But Mahomes also missed on some throws. And he was without his favorite target, Travis Kelce. It has been reported that the Chiefs are hoping for his return next week, but we’ll have to wait and see. In addition, Mahomes had a pick six when rookie Brian Branch snagged a mishandled ball by Kadarius Toney.
For their part the Lions had some drives that got bogged down or went nowhere. And they turned the ball over on downs at midfield. But Kansas City was not able to capitalize on the mistake. Thereby costing themselves the chance to put the game away. Meanwhile Jared Goff played a solid game and didn’t turn the ball over. The Lions running game was mediocre but seemed to pick up the yards when they were needed the most.
As usual there were grumblings on social media regarding the refereeing. People were saying that the RT for the Chiefs was consistently lined up in an illegal formation. And he was taking steps before the ball was snapped. No flags were ever thrown, no penalties were assessed by the referees. I’m not a fan of referee crews who constantly throw flags. But, this crew chose not to flag the offensive tackle during this game. I hope they will remember not to throw it in any other games for the same offense. Consistency calling penalties is all I ask.

The Chiefs offense may be in trouble if Travis Kelce is delayed in getting back on the field. Their receiving corps will need to get better in a hurry if that’s the case. If Kelce is back the Chiefs will most likely be fine for the season. The Lions, on the other hand, made some noise. They need to keep up their solid play and continue to improve their running game. But things do look promising for the team.
