Detroit Lions Chose To Withdraw Playoff Seeding Proposal Prior To Owners Voting

We now know that the tush push ban proposal did not get enough votes for approval. But, there were other proposals that needed to be considered such as the playoff seeding. However, the Detroit Lions chose to withdraw the playoff seeding proposal prior to the owners voting on it. There did seem to be some merit to the proposal as it wanted a team’s record to be the main consideration for seeding. They even altered the proposal to reflect that the division champion with the best record would be seeded No. 1.

So what went wrong that caused the Lions to withdraw their request? Well the short answer is that support for it waned, despite having altered the proposal. With support waning for it to pass, the Detroit Lions pulled their proposal to overhaul playoff seeding from the docket at the league’s spring meeting, according to multiple reports, leaving the four division winners in each conference to be guaranteed at least one home postseason game in 2025. CBS Sports NFL Insider Jonathan Jones confirmed, adding that the proposal “was never going to pass” this time around.

Pro Football Talk even reported that the league asked the Lions to make the proposal at the request of executive V.P. of football operations Troy Vincent. Furthermore, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell also wants to eliminate the guaranteed home game for teams that win their divisions. During the meeting regarding the proposal it was reported that Goodell became visibly irritated at the resistance to the measure.

One person opposed to the proposal is Pittsburgh Steelers head coach, Mike Tomlin, who stated:

“I’m a division purist, to be quite honest with you,” Tomlin said earlier this offseason. “I love the rivalries that is division play. I love the structure of our scheduling that highlights it. I just categorize myself as a division purist. I think the division winner should get a playoff game and a home playoff game.”

However, if the league wants something to happen it usually happens. As Judy Battista said in an interview, “When the league puts its shoulder into something it will eventually get the rule the way they want it. We have seen that in other rules changes in the past. It may not always get what it wants initially, eventually if it wants to see a rule change made the league usually gets what it wants eventually.”

So, despite the Lions withdrawing their proposal, we likely haven’t seen the last of the playoff seeding change.
