Detroit Lions And Taylor Decker Agreed To New Contract Extension
Some of the league’s best safeties and quarterbacks reached new deals last week. Up this week is the left tackle position. After all a quarterback can’t survive without a good left tackle. Recognizing this, the Detroit Lions and Taylor Decker agreed to a new contract extension. Adam Schefter posted the financial details on x.com:
A new deal in Detroit: “Lions left tackler Taylor Decker reached agreement on a three-year, $60 million extension, per sources. Decker was entering the last year of a deal scheduled to pay him $13.7 million. He is now under contract through 2027 season. Deal was negotiated @FeinsodJonathan and @Shawnlauvao at @SportsAmdg.”
Taylor entered the league in the 2016 NFL Draft when he was taken by the Lions with the 16th overall pick in the first round. He started as the left tackle right from the beginning and the nine year veteran has stayed there ever since. This will be his second extension and third contract overall with the Lions. Regarding the stability and longevity of his career, Decker had this to say:
“It’s not lost on me the fact that a lot of guys don’t get to spend their whole careers with one team,” Decker said of the extension that will keep him a Lion through the 2027 season. “Hopefully, that’s in the cards for me and from the contract extension it seems like it’s in the cards. I’m very fortunate.”
Decker also commented on the Lions retaining QB Jared Goff, RT Penie Sewell and WR Amon-Ra St. Brown:
“I think it speaks to they want to win,” Decker said. “We want to win. This is what we’re here to do. We’re here to win and we’re going to keep our guys if they can help us win.”

Keeping the band together is a good idea since the Detroit Lions are one of the favorites to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl. That’s in stark contrast to how the Lions used to be viewed. Decker was there when the team was almost a laughingstock of the league. But now the Lions are having the last laugh as they have turned things around and become a powerhouse.
As noted on the team website, Decker leads one of the best offensive lines in football that helped plow the way for the league’s No. 2 rushing attack last season. They surrendered just 31 sacks on 646 drop backs last year, a 4.8 percent rate that was the fourth best in the NFL. Therefore, Decker has rightfully earned the new extension.
