Detroit Lions And Star Defensive End Aidan Hutchinson Agreed To Massive Extension
After losing both their offensive and defensive coordinators to head coaching positions some wondered how the Motor City team would fare. Well they’re doing just fine, currently sitting in second place just behind the Green Bay Packers in the NFC North division. And with their latest move, things are looking especially bright for the team. That’s because the Detroit Lions and star defensive end Aidan Hutchinson have agreed to a massive extension.
Coming in with the details of the extension are NFL Network Insiders Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero. They reported that the extension is for $180 million over four years with $141 million in total guarantees. That’s the highest amount of guaranteed money for a non-quarterback position in the history of the NFL. The deal includes a $29 million injury guarantee in 2029 that converts to a full guarantee a year early in March 2028.
With his new extension, Hutchinson is now the second highest-paid pass rusher in the league. He comes in just behind Micah Parsons at $46.5M and right before T.J. Watt at $41M while Hutchinson is at $45M per year.
Detroit selected Hutchinson with the second overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. And he was named to the All-Rookie Team in 2022. Hutchinson even finished second in NFL Defensive Player of the Year voting in 2022. He earned his first Pro Bowl selection in 2023 having produced 11.5 sacks. It’s undeniable how effective he is on the defensive side of the ball. Unfortunately his 2024 season was cut short when he suffered a tibia and fibula fracture while sacking Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott. Prior to the season-ending injury he had been leading the league with 7.5 sacks through the first six weeks.
But he’s back this season and wreaking his usual havoc. Currently he ranks top 10 in the league in sacks (six) and pressure rate (19.2%). And he is the only player averaging more than one sack per game (1.13 sacks).

Besides his stellar defensive performance he is also a man of the community. Hutchinson carries a signature water jug to games that has the names of children he and his family have connected with, particularly those from local hospitals, written on it. This practice is a way for him to dedicate each game to a child he has met, whom he calls a “Hutch Hero.” Adam Schefter has a video explaining how the tradition got started. He gives credit to the children for inspiring him during his recovery from his broken leg.
Hutchinson means a lot to the community both on and off the field. And now he will remain a part of it at least through the 2030 season. Congratulations Aidan Hutchinson on your well-deserved extension!
