Detroit Lions And Dallas Cowboys Hired New Coordinators

Detroit experienced a run on their assistant coaches and lost a lot of good people. The Cowboys also lost their fair share of personnel this year. So that means it’s time to restock and get back up to full speed. Hence both the Dallas Cowboys and the Detroit Lions have hired new coordinators for their teams. For Detroit they have brought in John Morton as their offensive coordinator. Whereas Dallas has chosen Matt Eberflus to be their new defensive coordinator.

It was no surprise that the Lions were going to lose their former offensive coordinator, Ben Johnson. He chose to stay within the division by taking the Chicago Bears head coaching position. Johnson had helped Jared Goff develop into a top 10 quarterback along with a high-performing offense. So Morton will have some big shoes to fill. Morton, who is 55 years old, spent the 2022 season with the Lions as the team’s senior offensive assistant. So his familiarity with head coach Dan Campbell and the Detroit offense is certainly an advantage for him.

Morton started his coaching career in the NFL with the then-Oakland Raiders in 2002 as an offensive assistant. He moved on to the New Orleans Saints to take the same position under Sean Payton. Overall he has 21 years of NFL coaching experience across six clubs. Morton entered his second season as pass game coordinator for the Denver Broncos in 2024. He was hired by the club on Feb. 25, 2023. Now he’s back with the Lions.

Matt Eberflus was head coach of the Chicago Bears before being fired during the 2024 season. Now the Cowboys are bringing him on as their new defensive coordinator. This isn’t his first time with the organization as he was with the team from 2011 – 2017.

His entire coaching career has been on the defensive side of the ball. While he was with Dallas he worked as the linebackers coach. And he helped many of the linebackers to elevate their game such as DeMarcus Ware, Anthony Spencer, Sean Lee and Rolando McClain. In fact, Ware and Spencer had multiple Pro Bowl selections and became the fifth in team history to reach double-digit sacks. After Sean Lee recovered from a torn ACL in 2015, Eberflus helped him to transition to weakside linebacker. Lee totaled 156 tackles and was selected to his first Pro Bowl.

He also made his mark with the Indianapolis Colts as their defensive coordinator. He inherited the 30th ranked NFL defense and turned them into the 10th ranked defense in 2018.

Both coaches have returned to their old stomping grounds so we’ll see what they can do.
