Derek Carr’s Oblique Injury Confirmed Will Miss Some Games
Derek Carr was injured late in the game against the Chiefs on Monday night. Last evening Derek Carr’s oblique injury was confirmed and also that the quarterback will miss some games. With the Saints currently on a three game losing streak that’s not good news for the franchise. This type of injury involves the muscles on the side of the body between the ribs and pelvis. It typically occurs when the player takes a hard hit to the waist area. That’s precisely what happened to Carr when he was sacked. However, “It wasn’t even the hit, honestly,” Carr said of his injury. “It was just when I dropped back and torqued to throw.”
At any rate, Carr immediately grabbed his oblique as he stood up. And after a brief check on the sideline, he headed for the locker room. Carr will require plenty of rest to recover from the injury. It can take about two weeks to heal but it depends upon the person. If he is rushed back too quickly then moving effectively could be a problem. Or he could reinjure himself and be out of commission for even longer. No doubt the medical staff will manage him carefully.
Carr hasn’t missed a game due to injury since 2017, having played with a shoulder injury throughout much of 2023. So now the Saints will have to determine who will be the back up. Whomever they choose will face a tough turnaround, facing the Buccaneers on Sunday and the Broncos just four days later. Their backup options are Spencer Rattler or Jake Haener. It was Haener who came in as the replacement for Carr on Monday night. A fourth-round pick last year, Haener completed two of seven passes for 17 yards, and ran twice for nine yards.

However, many people are convinced that Spencer Rattler should be the one to start in Carr’s place. Rattler made an impression during the preseason looking really strong and composed. However, the starter will be playing behind a decimated offensive line. They have been without starting center Erik McCoy since he left the Philadelphia game Sept. 22. And starting right guard Cesar Ruiz finished against the Eagles but has missed the last two games. Shane Lemieux started at center but injured his ankle against Atlanta and was ruled out against the Chiefs.
Suffice it to say that the offensive line has been shuffled around more than a deck of cards. So whether it’s the second year Haener or the rookie Rattler starting they are going to need good protection. We’ll see if they get that when the Saints face the Buccaneers.
