Denver Nuggets Agree to Deal to Make David Adelman The Franchise’s Next Head Coach
He took over at the helm in a tough situation. Stabilizing the basketball organization as they finished out the season and made a run during the playoffs. And the team’s executives clearly feels he’s done a very good job and wish for the players to remain under his leadership. Therefore, on Thursday the Denver Nuggets agreed to a deal to make David Adelman the franchise’s next head coach.
Back in April Denver had begun to make changes in order to put the Nuggets “in a better position to compete for another title.” For this reason, the Nuggets fired their head coach, Michael Malone and general manager Calvin Booth. The decision was made with just three games remaining in the regular season and just days before the NBA playoffs were set to begin. The Nuggets’ lead assistant coach, David Adelman, was named the interim head coach at the time.
These moves were shocking because Malone was the winningest coach in Nuggets franchise history. And Calvin Booth was the GM who put all the pieces together. A roster that had won Denver their first championship ever just two years ago.
Nevertheless, fast forward and it is now Adelman’s show. How did it go? Well, not only did the Nuggets win the the last three games left in the season under Adelman; but they also eliminated the Lakers from playoff contention. Then took the very next series to Game 7 before suffering ultimate defeat.
So then, Denver’s performance under their interim coach did show some positives. The team had a lot fight. Even when threatened with injury.
ESPN’s Shams Charania spoke on Denver’s recent decisions while breaking the news about the Nuggets removing the interim tag from David. Charania reported, “The Denver Nuggets and interim David Adelman have agreed on a deal to make Adelman the franchise’s next head coach, sources tell ESPN. Adelman went 3-0 in regular season after taking over for Michael Malone and won a playoff series, leading Denver to one win from the West finals.”

Josh Kroenke also spoke to the press after this new head coach announcement. Kroenke revealed,
“I think that there was perhaps some confusion and some doubt over the decision-making, especially the timing of it, which I completely understand. But I am very proud of the way the group came together under some very difficult circumstances, and I am proud to say I thought we squeezed a little bit more out of the season than the direction we were heading six weeks ago.
Part of the thinking of making the change when we made it was to give David a chance. He’s grown with the group and he understands their tendencies as players. I think equally important right now … is he knows them as people, what makes them tick.
And I think bringing in somebody from the outside — while I was very open-minded to it initially — I saw the cohesiveness of the relationships on the human side. I think that’s a big factor in where we’re heading with this group now and getting the most out of them.”
Josh Kroenke also said he appreciated the fresh voice and perspective Adelman brought to the job and trusts he’ll build on that foundation now. He then added, however, any season during this Jokic era that doesn’t end with a parade is unacceptable. Lastly, Kroenke said he needs more time to decide on a new general manager.
