Denver Broncos and Patrick Surtain II Agreed To Extension
He hasn’t been around the league very long but he is already considered one of the best. And that’s why the Denver Broncos and Patrick Surtain II have agreed to a new extension. NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport posted the details:
Sources: The #Broncos and star CB Patrick Surtain II have agreed to terms on a massive 4-year extension worth $96M — $24M per year. The 24-year-old gets $77.5M guaranteed. The deal done by Tory Dandy of CAA makes Surtain the highest-paid DB in NFL history.
Surtain was the ninth overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft by the Denver Broncos. And he is certainly one of the best draft picks they’ve had in a long time. He will be a player that the Broncos can build around on the defensive side of the ball. Just as they are making Bo Nix their premier player on the offensive side. It made sense to lock Surtain in now as the price would have only gone up higher next season. He had two years remaining on his contract, including a fifth-year option worth $19.802 million in 2025. Now with the new extension they will have Surtain for six years.
As a rookie he hauled in four interceptions with 14 passes defensed. In the following two seasons he added on three interceptions and 22 passes defensed. And he became the first Bronco since at least 1999 to tally double-digit passes defensed in each of his first three seasons. Clearly he has impressed a lot of people as he is a two-time Pro Bowler and 2022 Associated Press first-team All-Pro. He also snagged two NFLPA first-team All-Pro selections. And was voted the Broncos’ 2023 Demaryius Thomas Team MVP Award winner. By the Denver Chapter of the Pro Football Writers of America.

In addition, to all the accolades, Surtain has proven to be durable and reliable. As evidenced by starting in 49 of 50 games during his three-year career. He has played in all but one game since being drafted. Plus he has the physical attributes to make him a top-notch cornerback. At 6’2″ he’s big enough not to get pushed around by the bigger pass catchers. But he’s also quick enough to not get burned by the speedy wide receivers.
It’s great to see him get this new extension. However, defensive backs still have some catching up to do. Only six of them have hit the $20-plus-million-per-year mark. Whereas 23 wide receivers make at least $20 million, including 12 north of $24 million per year. No doubt progress will continue to be made.
