Denver Broncos’ Alex Singleton Had Successful Surgery For Testicular Cancer
Men’s health is a subject that is too often ignored by the people most often impacted, men. It’s been studied and documented that men would rather do just about anything other than go to the doctor for a check-up. Naturally that kind of negligence leads to negative outcomes. But fortunately that wasn’t the case for one football player. Denver Broncos’ ILB Alex Singleton recently had successful surgery for testicular cancer. And the circumstances leading up to the surgery were somewhat unusual.
Singleton is both a co-captain and a leading tackler for the Broncos. As explained on the team’s website it was a series of events that led to the surgery:
Singleton was diagnosed on Monday, Nov. 3, following random NFL drug testing that flagged indicators, prompting further evaluation through a series of medical tests. The veteran linebacker played in Denver’s Week 9 win over the Texans without knowing the cause of elevated levels of hCG, and he then prepared for the Broncos’ Week 10 “Thursday Night Football” matchup with the Raiders while aware of the cancer diagnosis.
Even after receiving the diagnosis Singleton said he didn’t want it to change his life yet. So he was determined to play in the prime-time divisional matchup against the Raiders. In that game he played all 60 defensive snaps and the next day he had the surgery. The CT scan revealed that the cancer had not spread to other parts of his body. Now he must wait for the pathology report to plan the next steps for his recovery.
“It’s been a whirlwind, I would say,” Singleton said. “I don’t necessarily even know if I’ve fully coped with everything that’s gone on.”

Singleton gave credit and thanks to many people for their support including Dr. Andrew Zilavy and Dr. Geoff Ledgerwood, as well as the Broncos’ medical team. “They’ve been nothing but positive,” Singleton said. “… They have [done] nothing but [go] above and beyond. I knew how special this place was with my knee [surgery and recovery] and everything like that, but what they’ve done this past week has been remarkable and truly incredible.”
Because of his personal experience Singleton wants to advocate for early screening for testicular cancer now. Making his position clear, he said: “Yeah, we can get the word out to get everybody screened and checked. Don’t be afraid of the doctor, because I was for a long time.”
Hopefully other men will follow his advice and go to the doctor. Early detection can nip something as serious as cancer in the bud. Sharing his experience can help other men see the need to take care of their own health. We wish all the best to Alex as he takes the next steps in his recovery journey.
